Facebook – Project Stormtrooper

I’m 39 and work as an insurance claims assessor. I have been modding cars since I was 18 and have had 34 cars so far most of which have been modded of some description. I drive a 2017 Infiniti Q30 Sport as a daily and have the other 2 cars as projects. I do almost all of the work myself from bodywork, I.C.E, and interior to electrics.

Clio Mk1 (a.k.a Project Stormtrooper)

I bought the car in January 2000 as a standard grey automatic Bacarra 1.4 as my first car. I am the 2nd owner since being registered in 1992.

The proper mods started after having an accident after a year of ownership. I decided rather than putting it back to the standard I may as well do something a bit different.

The car's first major transformation was a Kustomorphose Corsa F2 wide bodykit as well as a full fibreglass bonnet and spoiler which took 2 months to complete. The spoiler is the actual one from the silver Renault 5 GTT in the Ali G film. I also fitted a modified Ecosse Peugeot 306 front splitter.

I started on the audio with 2x Kicker L7 15's and 2x RE HC12s running off Audiobahn A1800DTs and Rockford Fosgate bd500.1s. I also fitted a 15" screen, Playstation 2 and a fridge/heater.

In 2006 the interior was rebuilt and trimmed in leather and a new sound system with a 19" screen was. A Playstation 3 replaced the PS2. The audio used was 3x RE XXX 15" subs in a flat wall with 3x Solid Audio f2500d amps and 7x Powerstation backup batteries.

Due to the weight of the new system build, I had some suspension issues with shocks snapping clean in half. I went to Rayvern Hydraulics in Peterborough to have the air ride fitted.

It had some custom rear shocks, strengthened chassis rails and new shock mounting points. The Volvo B18FT engine was also fitted but the project was garaged for 5 years.

In 2012 the project started again and went through a big overhaul. The sound system was upgraded to 3x Orion HCCA 15.2 subs and 6x Solid Audio 2500d amps. It wasn’t long before some mechanical problems and working on the Supra forced it off the road again

In 2016 I decided to bring the whole car up to date as it was looking dated and sorry for itself. I decided to build something that would bring back the Max Power style in a retro way but with lots of modern touches and mad styling. 4x rear 10.5j Nissan GTR R35 20” wheels were sourced and the whole bodykit widened to create the perfect fitment. Special spacers and PCD adapters were bought from Latvia and gullwing doors were started. The front bumper is from a Mercedes GLA and the rear is from a Mercedes A45 with quad 4” exhausts.  The custom complete fibreglass bonnet has a new vent based on the Hyundai RN-20 concept car.

The engine is having a number of mods to run reliably and to have more power for the extra weight. It will having a T25 turbo, larger injectors and a standalone ECU as well as all of the standard Volvo electrics removed.

As this is primarily a car for audio, the whole interior is being redesigned to be as solid as possible and to be as efficient as it can be using cabin reduction, completely solid MDF and fibreglass panels, a panelled roof and steel inner windscreen frame which will house perspex. The side windows have also been mostly filled with MDF and fibreglass for rigidity.

Audio wise the Solid amps are staying but only 5 of them as I will be using 5x Fi BTL Neo subs. The front has 8x Lanzar Optidrive 8” speakers in custom pods underneath the gull wings. There are 2 sets of components and 4x bullet tweeters to go in the dash and door pillars. The electrical system consists of a deregulated 210amp alternator which will run 3 or 4 banks of lithium batteries in the rear.

The dash has 3x 10.1” tablets to control all of the car's functions through Bluetooth relays. These include lights, wipers, audio and system electrics and the air ride. They will also provide the speedo and Sat Nav. One of them will also display the engine readings for temperatures and oil pressure etc.

There are 2x 7” screens being fed by cameras in the door mirrors for rear view, and a 24” screen in the passenger side for the Playstation 5 when it is released.
