Outkast Panda Crew - Community Interest Company aiming to tackle anti-social behaviour

Since 2010, funding for youth services has been cut dramatically and this has coincided with a rapid increase in crime among young adults, often linked to a “poverty of hope”. When Outkast Panda Crew speak to young adults in their community about why they engage in crime, they often hear that they are bored and have nothing to do.

Established as a Car Club in 2017 based in Hull, Outkast Panda Crew have welcomed people who have identified as experiencing social anxiety and/or depression and a lack of confidence. As a result of their efforts, they have seen their members gain confidence and talk openly about the issues they are facing whilst learning how to fix and modify their cars. Building on their success, Outkast Panda Crew has grown into a Community Interest Company, a non-profit organization that provides young adults and those who derive from social poverty and disadvantaged areas an opportunity to learn vehicle maintenance and road safety that will guide them onto a path to gain qualifications and employment.

Recently, there have been a number of reports in the media of increased anti-social behaviour in Hull's communities. Outkast Panda Crew believes that a preventative strategy is a key to combating crime, tackling the cause at the root. Their services provide hope to young people, a gateway to employment and better opportunities to ensure they can reach their full potential and avoid a life of crime.

Outkast Panda Crew's project covers 3 areas: Vehicle Maintenance and Road Safety Training, Fostering New Connections and Further Education & Life Skills.

Young adults who take part in the Vehicle Maintenance & Road Safety Training will benefit from a mix of classroom-based theory lessons and workshop based practical sessions designed to help them understand how each component on a vehicle works and how to repair or replace parts, guided by their experienced team. These sessions cover everything from performing a routine service, brakes, suspension, exhaust, welding & fabrication and of course, making some of the most popular modifications. There are also regular briefings on Road Safety to ensure that the rules of the road are always respected.

They say they will make young adults feel valued by providing opportunities for social connections and relationships, encouraging participation and inclusion through community projects, building on social skills and providing a path to employment, empowering and strengthening communities. Since the establishment of Outkast Panda Crew, they have helped a number of their members develop new social skills by providing a nurturing environment where everyone can be themselves.

By joining their hub, young adults will have the opportunity to take part in social activities such as go-karting, bowling and more. They expect to benefit employers, especially in the vehicle maintenance trade, looking to take on staff/apprentices by building connections with their service users, who have already established an interest in vehicle maintenance, have developed some knowledge and experience through our programs and are ready to engage with the workplace, creating a sense of stability and security for both parties.

And they will provide opportunities to learn driving theory in preparation for the test, CV writing, IT Skills and Health & Safety as well as a short course on how to buy & sell cars, an invaluable session covering everything you need to know from how to obtain or change insurance details, vehicle excise duty and registration to how to ensure the car you're looking to buy is in a good condition and what hidden problems you should be on the lookout for.

Outkast Panda Crew C.I.C already have the backing of local MP's, Councillors and Humberside Police as well as a number of local organizations but in order to get the project off the ground, they are aiming to raise £36,000, are looking for a unit/premises to deliver the project from and are appealing for help acquiring tools and equipment required to maintain vehicles, office and classroom furniture and PPE. They would also welcome local businesses in the motor trade who are interested in working with them to provide employment opportunities to those who engage with their project.

Donations are able to be made via their website as well as their GoFundMe page here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/outkast-panda-crew-cic-community-project
