Shane Van Gisbergen Makes History with NASCAR Cup Series Win in Debut
Shane Van Gisbergen made history on Sunday, becoming the first driver to win in their NASCAR Cup Series debut since 1963. Van Gisbergen drove for Trackhouse Racing's Project 91 effort and took the checkered flag in the inaugural Chicago Street Race.
Van Gisbergen Becomes First Driver to Win in Cup Series Debut Since 1963
The race was shortened to 75 laps due to rain, but Van Gisbergen was never in danger of losing the lead after taking it from Justin Haley with five laps to go. He held off Haley and the rest of the field to score the victory, becoming the first road course specialist to win a race on a schedule oriented around those tracks since Mark Donohue did it for Team Penske in 1973.
Van Gisbergen Takes the Lead with Five Laps to Go
Van Gisbergen's win was a major upset, as he was only making his second start in the NASCAR Cup Series. He had previously competed in the Xfinity Series in 2017, but this was his first time racing in the top level of NASCAR.
Van Gisbergen Holds Off Justin Haley to Take the Win
Van Gisbergen's win is a major boost for Trackhouse Racing, which is in its second season in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team has already scored two wins this season, with Ross Chastain winning at Nashville and now Van Gisbergen winning at Chicago.
Van Gisbergen's Win Caps Off Historic Weekend for Trackhouse Racing
Van Gisbergen's win is also a major boost for NASCAR, which is looking to attract more international drivers. Van Gisbergen is the first driver from outside of North America to win a NASCAR Cup Series race since Marcos Ambrose won at Watkins Glen in 2014.
Van Gisbergen's win is a historic moment for NASCAR, and it is sure to be remembered for years to come.
