Bagged Toyota bB: A Rare Right-Hand-Drive Import in the American Midwest

Boxy, blue and unapologetically Japanese, Hannah Gragg's bagged Toyota bB is the only one of its kind in her part of the heartland. The bB is the Japanese-market original that Toyota later rebadged as the Scion xB for America, and Hannah's 2000 example arrived in the US as a right-hand-drive import with a lot of work waiting for it. She runs a small salon in the Kansas City area of Missouri, and you can follow the car on Instagram at @bentobox.bb. Photography comes from Alex Tran (@specsheet.photography) and Kinzer Taylor (@kinzertaylor22). This is the story of how it got here, told in Hannah's own words. Over to Hannah.

Why a Bagged Toyota bB Turns Heads

The bB went on sale in Japan in February 2000, and a few years later Toyota swapped the steering wheel to the left side and sold it in the States as the Scion xB. That means plenty of Americans grew up around its little brother, but very few have seen the real thing. A bagged Toyota bB in right-hand-drive form, with a Modellista bumper and period-correct Japanese parts, is a different proposition entirely, and it explains the double takes Hannah keeps getting.

About the Owner: Hot Wheels, Hobbies and Wheels of Every Kind

Located in the Kansas City area of Missouri, I own a small salon, DIY anything I can get my hands on, enjoy the autumn season and, most of all, the strongly loved hobby of my cars. From a very young age anything with wheels interested me. Hot Wheels are a staple in this household, and growing up Tonka trucks were a go-to.

Keeping busy with projects is my drive and passion. Between customising my exterior or interior, crafting Halloween decor or making candles, there's always something I'm doing!

Where the Car Bug Started

Hot Wheels around the age of 7 is what really started the fascination. Seeing faces in the front ends of cars and the expressions in the headlights, grilles and fog lights, I feel like we all noticed the characters every car had at some point. The biggest motive for getting into cars was Bumblebee in the first Transformers movie in 2007. At 15 years old I craved owning the modded, beat-up-looking '74 Chevy Camaro.

Then in 2018 I bought my first new car, a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, and that's when I entered the local and surrounding car scene. Life threw some interesting ups and downs and that car got me through it all. Now it's retired from shows and converted to daily driving. The Toyota bB took over the new role of showing, with a lot more in store for the future of my path as a car enthusiast.

How I Ended Up With a Bagged Toyota bB

Well, the original plan was to be the first to import a Toyota bB once it became legal in the US. But plans tend to change…

Ever since I set eyes on a Scion xB in the early 2000s I knew I had to have one. In 2022 I actually bought my first Scion xB. I owned and modified it for a few years, then sold it to a sweet family for their daughter's first car. After learning about the Toyota bB, I thought, why not own the original? So I sold my Scion and began the task of getting my bB. If you want to see how the American-market version gets built, have a look at this 2005 bagged Scion xB show car and Jamie Stavert Johnson's 2006 Scion xB on the site.

The Import Saga: Sight Unseen and a Restoration in Disguise

In May 2025 I purchased the blue box with the hope the ad pictures were what I was getting. The exporter did not mention he buys sight unseen. Unfortunately, I had A LOT of work ahead of me, not knowing it was going to be basically a restoration project. After more issues with how to transport it overseas, it finally arrived in Texas at the end of January 2026.

For the time spent in Texas it was supposed to get a new air ride, a trunk display and small fixes. Instead, for 6 straight months, hardly any work. In July I had had enough, and once the car finally landed in my driveway I realised how much work I actually had to do. The tyres were 11 years old, the last oil change tag was 7 years old, the tint was scratched like Freddy Krueger had a blast, the paint was scratched, and it was filthy.

Putting the Fun Into the Project

After a very expensive trip to a friend's shop for maintenance, it was finally time to put the fun into the project. Another friend helped install the air ride and trunk display, I paint-matched rare JDM parts, and I went nonstop for 2 months.

The visual theme is a 2000s tuner build from Japan, so keeping all additional parts specifically from Japan, or a close replica, is crucial. Over the past year and a half I've collected and hoarded a spare room of Toyota bB parts from auctions, sites and more. We have a long way to go still, and with off season coming up I will tackle the full interior, engine bay and trunk. But with only 2 and a half months in so far, I'd say a ton has been accomplished!

Life With a Right-Hand-Drive Toyota bB

First and foremost, driving on the other side of the car has been the most fun! I was so scared of how I'd feel driving RHD, but to be honest, it's better than LHD! In the Midwest I am so far the only Toyota bB. There are more and more coming up on the coasts, but here in the heartland, none.

The style of these boxy little cars I can't stop looking at. Getting the double takes because it's RHD is the best part: people think it's "just a Scion", look away, then look back again with a "wait a minute". That's awesome.

Bagged Toyota bB Build List and Specs

Hannah's bagged Toyota bB leans hard into its Japanese roots, mixing rare bB-specific aftermarket parts with some very personal touches. Here's the full rundown of the bagged Toyota bB, starting with the engine bay.

Engine Bay

Interior

The custom seat covers came with the car (they were disgusting, so they got a proper clean). From there Hannah added her own hand-stitched embroidery to the door panels and headrest covers, then brought in some rare bB aftermarket parts.

  • Custom seat covers, cleaned
  • Hand-stitch embroidery on door panels and headrest covers
  • Rare bB aftermarket parts from Krazy Karrot, D.A.D. Garson, Toyota and NRG
  • Trunk display, created between Hannah and a friend
  • Carrozzeria window speakers that light up

My favourite interior bit is the Carrozzeria window speakers that light up, the real cherry on top.

Suspension

Air ride is what makes the stance possible, and it was one of the first jobs once the car was home.

  • Ceika air ride kit

Exterior

The paint is original, though the roof and front bumper were repainted because of peeling, then detailed beautifully by Excalibur Detail.

  • Original paint, with roof and front bumper repainted
  • Rare Modellista Street Billet "Yakuza" front bumper with double sets of fog lights
  • Original OEM aftermarket-option grille
  • Hood spoiler replica
  • Rear mid wing from Highworks Garage in Japan
  • Detailing by Excalibur Detail

Who Did the Work on This Bagged Toyota bB?

Maintenance was mainly by Daniel at his shop, Vendetta Performance, and exterior detailing was by Taylor and his team at Excalibur Detail. A friend helped with the air ride at home and the rest was myself.

Future Plans for the Bagged Toyota bB

The idea of this build is set in 2 phases: the first phase is 2000s tuner, and the second phase, later on, becomes a VIP theme. With all that has currently been added it's like a mash-up of the two phases, but there's more work to be done.

Over winter I plan to tackle the interior with the door cards, pillars and maybe the headliner. Then comes an underglow install, more interior RGB lighting, and a plan for the engine bay. Can't go too crazy all at once, so I need to spread out the projects to keep the new additions exciting for years to come.
