Jamie Stavert Johnson - 2006 Scion xB

Scions are fun but are becoming harder to modify since they have been discontinued. Parts are becoming rarer and more expensive when you find them. Always easy to find car pages for brands you like, always recommend joining a page and talking to owners before getting any kind of car. Is a great way to learn about the specifics of what you want.

Hey guys it’s Donnie (r0cean11) coming back with another amazing build that I have been following for many years. I have known Jamie and her husband Daric for a little over 10 years. I have shot her car before, but now I get the chance to share this build with the rest of you. The Scion xB has now been discontinued but has a rather large following and I'm sure you have seen some of these knocking about at car shows.

There are even quite a few clubs and groups dedicated to this lovely little motor like @boxed_lifestyle, make sure to check them out they have some gorgeous examples and a thriving well organized community,

The OG Scion people have given her lots of advice online to help to find parts and seeing their builds showed her what was possible, and this is what the car community is all about helping each other as we all have a common interest in cars, no matter what they are, or where you are from, Jamie is part of Team Elevate a very strong and well-organized club, with lots of great cars and people, make sure to check them out on Instagram here - @team.elevate_

So is it any wonder this little Box has its own following, it's compact, but clean features and its unusual look from everyday cars give it plenty to shout about. The amount of detail and work she has put into this xB still blows my mind and she isn’t even done yet, so make sure to follow her build on Instagram. Here is a little bit of the backstory about this car.

"When all is said and done, all roads lead to the same end. So it's not which road you take, but how you take it."

I have lived around the Bay Area (California) all my life, am 42 and work as a Correspondent Legal Purchaser for CMG Financial for about 10 years. I have been with my husband for over 27 years and I am grateful that we share a lot of the same hobbies and passions.

I grew up as the classic annoying little sister, following one of my six older brothers around, trying to customize my BMX bike as that was what they were into at the time. Around 13, I moved in with my older brother Brian’s best friend Daric and his family. Growing up in their house, I helped work on the cars as they didn’t believe in sending them to a shop to have work done that we could do ourselves. I remember having car issues one day in their old Mercedes, had the distributor cap off trying to figure out the issue and a guy pulled up, saw me with the part in my hand and said he was going to offer to help, but it looked like I knew more about cars than he did before driving away.

Growing up in the 90s, Daric and his friends had come to appreciate mini trucks and that is where I came to love how you could customize and personalize vehicles to help people see a side of you that they might not have noticed before. Daric and I started going to car shows here and there and it made me want something more than just a typical daily driver.

When I first saw the Scion xB, I was not a big fan. My twin brother had one for a short while and we took a few trips with him in it and I was surprised by the size. Then one of my co-workers Patrick got one that he called Magoo, he loved that little thing and took it everywhere and enjoyed its size and that it was fun to drive. Going to lunch and hanging out in it, it started to grow on me. In 2008, I was laid off from my job at a mortgage company when the housing market crashed and decided to use my severance package to get a good commuter car and decided to look for a Scion xB for myself.

While searching online, I came across a 2006 Release Series 3 that was a limited edition color and fell in love with it. I have collected frogs since I was younger, so the Envy Green color just seemed to call to me. I made Daric go with me to a dealership to look at one but saw body damage to it and decided to keep looking until I found another one in better shape. I can still hear Daric asking me if I was sure that this was the car I wanted?

Once he did a little research and saw how we could modify it to make it more our style, then he was on board as he didn’t care for the way they looked when they were stock. We lowered it, got wheels for it, and had started to do a few slight modifications and joined a local Scion car club. While driving with my mom to lunch one day in Tracy, I got into an accident with two other cars and totaled my Scion. Within a week, Daric found another for sale on eBay in Southern California and made arrangements with the owner to drive down and purchase it. I had no idea that the car I bought with the intention of driving as a commuter car would end up becoming my pride and joy and my show car.

The first car I owned was a black 1987 Chevy S-10 Blazer that was black and lowered with Centerline wheels. I remember taking a mechanic for a ride in it one day and he told me that it rode like a skateboard and sounded like a boat (had Flowmaster exhaust on it). It was fun and I loved the way people looked at it as it was a nice-looking blazer. Sadly, we had to sell that car to a wrecking yard due to cracks in the frame, but I loved that car and cried when I had to let it go. I had become used to having a distinct car and enjoyed the way lowered cars handled.

I always enjoy the looks the Scion gets and how it surprises people when they stop to notice all the small details that have been put into this car. It doesn’t have to be your style, but I like looking for inspiration and ideas from different builds out there. My husband, Daric has been a big inspiration and an amazing resource for me in this build. His knowledge and determination helped me find, import and create the parts I wanted and needed to make this car look and drive the way it does. My Scion would not be what it is without his support and passion for building and working on cars. Cannot say how grateful I am to have someone that helps me work on my car and teaches me about the things that I don’t know. I feel proud to have built this car sponsor free and with the help of my husband, the only work we didn’t do to the car ourselves was the paint and bodywork.

Attention to detail is what makes my car stand out. Feel like I have tried to touch a little bit of everything as I have been working on this build for over 10 years. Have tried to put a little something for everyone to appreciate if they just take the time to look.

I want to give a shout out to all the OG Scion people that have been a part of our lives, from advice online to help to find parts. Seeing their builds showed me what was possible. Also want to give a shout to Team Elevate. I appreciate my car family and friends, both local and distant, for their support and friendship as it is a big part of what makes car shows fun.

This car has introduced me to so many people, both good and bad. It has taught me to appreciate the people that are true to themselves as well as their friends and it has shown me what kind of person I don’t want to be at the same time. Have found a sense of community and family with people that share the same passions.

Dream cars I hope to own one day… A VW bus has always been a dream of mine, along with a few other classic VWs… Would also love to own a 1970’s Porsche 911 Carrera. I will never sell this car, but I think I might retire her for a while and work on my most recently obtained project; a 1995 VW Cabrio.

At the end of the day, it should come down to what you want for your build, it should reflect you and your vision. Don’t let other people make you feel like you need to do things a certain way as we all have our own sense of style and individuality. All the cars you see were once just a dream in somebody’s head.

What do you think?
