A Different Kind of Automotive Event

Holy crap.

That's honestly the best way to describe a first impression of Velocity Invitational. The moment I walked through the gates at Sonoma Raceway, it was clear this wasn't going to be your typical automotive event.

Nestled among the rolling hills of Sonoma wine country, the venue itself was breathtaking. Perfect weather, clear skies, and scenery straight out of a postcard — and everywhere you looked, some of the most incredible automobiles ever built set against that backdrop. What immediately stood out was the atmosphere. Unlike many modern events that chase trends, social media moments, or the latest builds, Velocity Invitational 2026 felt like a genuine celebration of automotive history. It wasn't about who had the biggest wheels or the lowest ride height. It was about honouring the machines, engineers, racers, and manufacturers that helped shape the automotive world we know today.

And honestly? That was refreshing.

As enthusiasts we're always chasing the next big thing. Velocity Invitational gave everyone an opportunity to slow down and appreciate where it all started.

European Royalty Everywhere

It's no secret that Velocity Invitational leans heavily toward European performance and motorsports heritage. Ferraris, Porsches, Aston Martins, McLarens, Ford GTs, and countless historic race cars filled the paddocks and display areas. Every direction you turned seemed to reveal another automotive icon.

As a photographer, I was in heaven.

Normally when you're covering an event, there are a handful of vehicles that really stand out. Here, it felt like every few feet there was another bucket-list car waiting to be photographed. One of the biggest crowd magnets throughout the weekend was the Ferrari Enzo — and even today, more than twenty years after its introduction, it still looks futuristic. The aggressive lines, the Formula 1-inspired design, the unmistakable presence. Watching people gather around it was a reminder of just how influential that car was when it debuted.

Nearby sat modern Ferraris, rare Porsches, and a collection of vehicles most enthusiasts only ever see in magazines or on a screen. Yet somehow, despite all that exotic machinery surrounding me, there was one car that kept pulling me back.

The Car That Stole the Show

Let's be honest.

My favourite vehicle of the entire event wasn't a Ferrari. It wasn't a Porsche. It wasn't even one of the million-dollar race cars.

It was the Hakosuka GT-R.

No surprise there. I've always had a soft spot for classic Japanese performance, and seeing a Hakosuka in person never gets old. The styling is simple yet aggressive. The racing heritage is legendary. Its influence on automotive culture runs decades deep and shows no sign of fading. While most of the crowd was gathered around the European exotics, I found myself returning to the Hakosuka multiple times throughout the day.

There's something special about a car that doesn't need flashy technology or astronomical horsepower numbers to earn respect. The Hakosuka commands attention through its history alone. Standing there looking at it, surrounded by some of the most expensive cars in the world, I couldn't help but smile. The GT-R wasn't trying to compete with anything around it.

It didn't have to. Its reputation was already secured long before most of those cars ever existed.

More Than Just European Performance

Although Velocity Invitational leans heavily toward European vehicles and historic motorsports, there were still plenty of surprises for import enthusiasts. Classic Datsuns, Japanese sports cars, and a handful of domestic machines were scattered throughout the displays, diversifying the experience in exactly the right way.

That balance mattered. It reminded everyone that automotive history isn't limited to a single country, manufacturer, or vehicle style. Every era and every region has contributed something important to this hobby. Seeing a classic Datsun sitting near a Ferrari. Watching enthusiasts admire a Japanese icon with the same excitement they gave a European exotic. Those moments highlighted what makes events like this worth travelling for.

Passion is universal. Whether it's a GT-R, a Porsche, a Ferrari, or a vintage race car, enthusiasts recognise greatness when they see it.

A Living Automotive Museum

One of the things Velocity Invitational does exceptionally well is tell a story. Many automotive events focus on displaying vehicles — this one focuses on displaying history. Every car seemed to represent a specific moment in motorsports or automotive development, and walking through the event felt less like attending a traditional car show and more like exploring a living museum.

You could trace the evolution of performance engineering simply by moving from one display to the next. From vintage racers to modern hypercars, every vehicle served as a chapter in how far the automotive world has come.

The Yokohama display was one of the best examples of this — historic race cars wearing iconic liveries, decades of racing heritage presented in one location. Seeing those cars up close gives you a completely different understanding of the engineering, innovation, and dedication that went into creating them. Photographs can capture detail. But standing inches from these machines is the only way to truly feel them.

The Sound of History

The static displays were only part of the experience.

The racing itself was absolutely incredible. There's something magical about hearing historic race cars come to life — the sound alone transports you somewhere else entirely. The roar of engines echoed throughout Sonoma Raceway as these machines attacked corners and blasted down straights exactly as they were designed to do. Pictures simply can't capture that.

You can't photograph the vibration in your chest when a race car flies past. You can't photograph the smell of race fuel hanging in the air. You can't photograph the excitement of hearing engines from multiple generations sharing the same piece of tarmac. That's something you have to experience firsthand.

Watching these cars being driven rather than simply displayed added another layer of appreciation altogether. These weren't museum pieces sitting behind ropes — they were living, breathing pieces of automotive history.

Why Events Like This Matter

What I appreciated most about Velocity Invitational 2026 was that it wasn't trying to be the biggest event. It wasn't trying to be the loudest. And it certainly wasn't chasing trends.

Instead, it focused entirely on celebrating automotive heritage and preserving the stories behind some of the most influential vehicles ever built. Every car had a purpose. Every display had meaning. Every race honoured a chapter of motorsports history.

As the sun began setting behind Sonoma's rolling hills and the crowds slowly made their way toward the exits, I took one last walk through the paddock. Golden light reflecting off polished paint and carbon fibre. Conversations between enthusiasts filling the air. Engines still firing up somewhere in the distance.

For a few moments, everything felt perfect.

Velocity Invitational isn't just a car show. It's a reminder of why we fell in love with cars in the first place. Whether your passion is European exotics, vintage race cars, American muscle, or classic Japanese legends, there's something here that stays with you long after you've gone home.

And if you're anything like me, you'll probably leave wanting a Hakosuka GT-R even more than you did before.

r0cean11 Photography began as a simple hobby for me—something I explored out of pure curiosity and passion. Twenty-four years later, it has grown into one of the defining parts of my life. Before stepping fully into automotive photography, I spent years building cars for SEMA. I photographed my own builds and projects long before I ever considered taking the craft seriously. That all changed when my last build was totaled; from that moment, photography became more than an interest—it became my purpose. ----------- Today, I shoot and write for Stance Auto Magazine, PASMAG, 742 Marketing Events, Super Lap Battle, Global Time Attack, RACEWORZ, and a wide range of automotive events across the United States. ----------- To me, automotive photography is more than capturing a vehicle—it’s about telling the story that lives within it. Every builder leaves a piece of themselves in their car, and my job is to honor that by showcasing their vision through my lens. ----------- You’ll find my event coverage, feature shoots, and automotive storytelling across all my platforms.
