What is ATB?
ATB, short for All Team Bash is an event hosted by husband and wife (María) and (Kimo) in the automotive community. We started this event in the summer of 2008 to focus on the community aspect of the automotive lifestyle.
After attending car shows for years together, we wanted to create something of our own that focused on the family atmosphere built by car clubs. We wanted car clubs to hang out together and BBQ, instead of worrying about judging or awards. We wanted to focus on the people.
Who are you?
My name is David, but I go by Kimo. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. It is a name I acquired in hip-hop culture. I am an artist, a lyricist, a musician, a father, a husband, and an event host. Hip hop is my first love, but as I grew up, I fell in love with the art of lowrider cars and lowrider bikes.
My first car was a 1988 Honda Accord. I wanted to put spokes on it so badly! (Kind of would love to have that now) As I started visiting local import shops, the import culture started to rub off on me. After meeting María, I bought an Integra that I kept for 18 years and built through many stages. I attended a lot of events, chasing trophies for a while. My car club (Team Sunworks) was a very important part of my life and being involved with them really felt like a close family.
The trophy chasing started to feel wrong for me, I just wanted to hang out with car people and give each other support, love and ideas. So, María and I started All Team Bash, and many years later it grew outside of our local area, and we started travelling with the event. María is the anchor and structure of ATB.
Born in Quito, Ecuador, María was raised in Houston, Texas. Unlike me, she did not grow up around cars, but she joined me on my adventures with the team and the many stages of my cars. Her love is with the community and the people. We have been married for 18 years and have two kids. María is an adoptee advocate, lover of books an avid movie/tv show watcher, mother, wife, and friend.
When María is not organizing and hosting events, she is heavily involved as a change maker in the adoptee community and co-facilitates a virtual community called Adoptees of South America + Extended Latin Americas. In 2020, after searching for her birth family for 13 years, she found them online during the global pandemic.
During the time we were at home with businesses closing, including our own, she was able to focus on her efforts to co-create a space for other adoptees with ties to Latin America. She has been my number-one support for 20 years now, and without her, we wouldn't have ATB. She handles a lot of big behind-the-scenes work and organization for all the events.
Between us, we split up the workload and together we are a strong team. We couldn't do any of it without the help of much local staff from each city that show up early and work hard to help the events run smoothly. The truth is, we just believe in people. We want to see people thrive together. The cars are only an excuse to help us see each other as individuals.
Then when we find common ground, we can appreciate each other's differences. Things continue to change in the world around us, but our goal is to stay constant so we can grow together. And while I know that not everyone will understand it, I am thankful for all of the teams and people who are here for it. ATB helps me feel like we have a purpose. And to see positive growth out there in any form, makes us feel like it's all worth it.
The main difference between what we do and what other events do is just in who we are. Every event has its purpose, and hopefully, ours is to help you all remember who you are as people, with or without your cars. Show car or stock. Everyone starts somewhere different, but we can all meet in the middle and show respect.
Memorable moments
When our trailer was stolen it shook us up pretty well. But despite the traumatic side of it, the community showed up and showed us, love. Seeing the community come together when it felt like it was over is something we will never forget.
We've had weddings and proposals at events, and we've memorialized people that we've lost and, in their memory, it reminds me of why all of you are important to me, important to María and to each other. My memories of ATB are of vivid personal moments in people's lives, and those people sharing that with us.
I get discouraged at times, but deep inside I know that this community is worth fighting for, and we are going to do our part to promote positive growth and keep us all together. I just want people to know that they are important. Even if their car isn't up to somebody else's standards. I believe in building the person.
Then the person builds the car. Not the other way around. Through the years we've met some cool people and watched each other grow. People like Adam Delgadillo who is a huge part of his own local automotive community, behind the lens as well as with his own build, and behind that camera is a person with dreams, goals, and challenges.
There is a story connected to each person, and their car is only one part of that story.
