An FP Red Turbo, Inline Racing Powerhouse

Every proper Mitsubishi Evo 8 build has an origin story that starts small and spirals into something much bigger, and Michael Villarreal's is no exception. Michael works as an equipment operator at Halliburton Energy Services, and when he's not on the job, he's usually splitting his time between his projects and his kid. When he picked up this Evo, the plan was simple: a weekend car that could double as a daily, nothing too extravagant. That plan didn't last long.

From Weekend Cruiser to Full Engine Rebuild

The turning point came the moment Michael decided to upgrade the turbo to an FP Red from Forced Performance. During the swap, he discovered the motor was starving for oil, a problem that could have turned into a very expensive lesson if left unchecked. Rather than patch it and hope for the best, he pulled the engine and transmission out that same night and shipped everything off to Huy Tran, owner of Inline Racing, with one instruction: build it properly, the way you'd build it for yourself. While the engine was apart, the transmission came out too and got the same treatment.

That decision is really where this Mitsubishi Evo 8 build found its identity. What started as a simple turbo upgrade turned into a ground up rebuild, with a fully built short block, a ported cylinder head and a fuel system designed to support serious power on E85. Nothing on this car was left to chance, and that shows in how the finished spec list reads.

Living With an Evo 8: The Highs, the Lows, and Everything In Between

For Michael, owning this car is about more than lap times or dyno numbers. I love owning this car, it's an amazing feeling when you're just driving around and hear compliments from complete strangers, thumbs up here and there, or seeing little kids just looking as I pass by. I remember being one of those kids, turning my head for any cool looking and sounding car that passed by and putting cars into my dream car bucket list.

That full circle moment, going from the kid staring at a passing Evo to the guy behind the wheel of one, is a big part of what keeps this hobby worth it for so many of us. There's also the flip side, the part every Evo owner knows all too well. I definitely get excited when I arrive home from work, opening the garage and seeing the Evo just sitting there, always eager to drive it but also stressed about hoping it doesn't break. I'm more than sure all the Evo owners can relate to the emotional rollercoaster these beautiful machines put us through.

Buying an Evo 8? Do Your Homework First

Michael's advice to anyone thinking about buying one of these cars comes from experience, not theory. Do your research before buying one of these cars, no matter how "new" the engine is. Always check the paperwork and run the CARFAX, more than likely it has had more than one owner. And if you do decide to buy one, make sure you have enough to buy another, these cars are not for the weak hearted. I can promise you that you will want to sell it, part it, more than once, ha! I've gone through this experience.

It's blunt advice, but it's honest, and it's exactly the kind of thing that separates people who've actually lived with a built Evo 8 engine from people who just admire them from a distance. Whether the car is built for racing or for the show circuit, Michael points out that every modification tends to need a supporting mod to keep everything running efficiently, which is part of why builds like this one snowball the way they do. What makes this particular car stand out where he lives is rarity. There aren't many Evos in his area, and the white Work Meister wheels are what really make it pop against the crowd.

The drivetrain build was handled entirely by Inline Racing, and Michael is quick to credit their knowledge and attention to detail throughout the process. He's also had a strong network of friends supporting the build along the way, from research and horsepower goal setting right down to the finer details of the wheel specs.

What's Next for This Evo 8 Build

Michael already has his eye on the next step, an FP Zero turbo for more power, along with a full carbon fibre front end. For now though, he's happy to let the car sit as it is and enjoy it. Being part of the car scene has introduced him to all types of people, from exotic car owners to lowrider builders, and along the way he's picked up knowledge, DIY skills and lasting friendships. As he puts it, everyone in the scene shares the same love for their cars and can talk about them for hours, whether that's origin stories or how a build ended up where it is now. He's found the community welcoming whether you roll with a club or show up solo.

This Mitsubishi Evo 8 build started as a simple weekend car and turned into a fully built engine, a rebuilt transmission and a wheel and brake setup that turns heads even in a scene full of built cars. As Michael sums it up himself, this is my dream car.
