"More than anything, this build represents my journey within the automotive community. From the first time I rode in a modified Honda as a teenager and fell in love with cars, to owning one of the most recognisable NSXs in the world, this vehicle embodies everything I love about automotive culture." – Vern Lapuz

From a Lunch Break Ride to Leading UTI

Vern Lapuz is born and raised in Southern California. Husband, father of three, and someone who believes everything should be rooted in faith, work ethic, and impact.

Professionally, he serves as Regional Director of Admissions for Universal Technical Institute (UTI). He helps students explore career paths in the skilled trades and transportation industry. Started as a representative in a completely new industry and grew into a regional leadership role. Now he leads teams, builds school and community partnerships, and creates large-scale events that connect students, families, educators, employers, and industry partners.

But his story with cars started way before UTI.

In high school, a friend took him for a ride in a fully caged, GSR-swapped 1992 Honda Civic Hatchback. During lunch, they jumped in and headed out. From the moment his friend hit the gas, Vern was hooked.

The acceleration. The sound. The sensation of being pushed back into the seat. The way the car ripped through each gear completely blew him away. It was the first time he'd experienced something like that.

That ride didn't just introduce him to performance cars—it ignited a passion for the automotive industry that's stayed with him ever since.

More Than Just a Car: Automotive History on Wheels

The Acura NSX has always been one of the most iconic Japanese sports cars ever built. But what drew Vern to this particular 1992 Acura NSX build was its history and significance within automotive culture.

This isn't just a modified NSX.

This car was featured in The Fast and the Furious. It was the cover car for Forza Motorsport 1. It has multiple SEMA attendances and has become a recognisable piece of automotive history.

For someone who grew up playing racing games, watching car movies, and dreaming about owning an NSX one day, the opportunity to own this specific car was something Vern couldn't pass up (https://www.acura.com/vehicles/nsx).

What makes the story even more special is that Vern purchased the car from a close friend who cared for it meticulously for many years. Knowing the vehicle's history and the level of attention it received gave him confidence he was becoming the next caretaker of something truly special—not just buying another project car.

His goal has always been to preserve what made the car iconic while continuing to evolve it in a way that respects its legacy.

Under the Hood: 500+ HP of Controlled Aggression

The 1992 Acura NSX build retains its legendary 3.0-litre C30A V6 but performance has been elevated significantly.

A Science of Speed TVS supercharger system with intercooler and heat exchanger breathes serious boost into the engine. AEM Infinity engine management with E85 flex fuel capability means the car runs on ethanol for extra power and efficiency.

Upgraded injectors, fuel system components, and supporting modifications allow the car to produce over 500 horsepower to the rear wheels. That's serious power for a mid-engine car with no electronic nannies.

Additional upgrades including Pride headers, Gruppe-M intake components, and Gruppe-M exhaust create a package that delivers modern performance while maintaining the soul of Honda's original masterpiece.

The engine bay itself is a work of art. Cantrell Concepts billet and carbon fiber accessories throughout—oil cap, dipstick, coolant tank cap. Every detail was considered.

Exterior: Mamba Green Over Monterey Blue

The exterior is where this 1992 Acura NSX build truly showcases its individuality.

The original Monterey Blue paint remains underneath a PPFI Mamba Green protective wrap, creating a unique appearance while preserving the iconic factory color below. It's a smart move for a historically significant car—protection without permanent alteration.

The body has been transformed with a custom one-off Burn Up front bumper, Marga Hills front fenders and side spats, Taitec wide rear fenders, Lechers side skirts, and a custom Gruppe-M rear valance. The styling inspiration pulls from Japanese Super GT and JGTC race cars.

Carbon fiber components are found throughout: Advance GT hood, Seibon trunk and wing, Pride rear duct, Groupe-M side ducts, Craftsquare mirrors, and a Science of Speed Lexan hatch with carbon fiber roof scoop.

Every piece was selected to blend functionality, performance, and aggressive styling. Nothing's there just because it looks cool. Everything serves the vision of this 1992 Acura NSX build.

Interior: Driver-Focused Cockpit

The interior follows the same philosophy as the exterior: purposeful, functional, performance-driven.

Bride bucket seats with carbon Kevlar backing in red. Dogfight Racing 6-point FIA harnesses that mean business. Studio RSR roll bar for serious driving. Momo steering wheel with NSX-R horn button.

Worksbell quick-release system so the wheel comes out in seconds. Blitz instrumentation with temp, pressure, and boost gauges showing real-time data. Mugen aluminum pedals. Everything is stripped down and purposeful.

But it's not all raw racing car. The interior also retains a premium audio setup featuring McIntosh amplifiers, Focal components, Eclipse navigation, and JL Audio subwoofers. A combination of old-school Japanese tuning culture with modern comfort and usability.

NSX-R inspired components throughout—carbon fiber shift boot, Zanardi shift stalk, Zanardi edition floor mats. The attention to detail is obsessive.

Suspension, Brakes, Wheels: Built to Handle 500 HP

The suspension, braking, and wheel package were engineered to support the power and aesthetics of the vehicle.

AP Racing 4-piston big brake system up front with 13" slotted floating rotors. G-Tech steel braided lines prevent fade. The stopping power matches the acceleration.

Volk Racing ZE40 wheels in bronze (18x9.5 front, 18x10.5 rear) with Toyo tires provide the grip needed. The fitment is aggressive without looking out of proportion.

Tein RA coilovers handle the suspension duty. NSX-R chassis braces and Science of Speed sway bars keep everything planted through corners. The result is a car that performs as well as it looks.

The Driving Experience: Raw and Unfiltered

Driving a 1992 Acura NSX build like this is an experience that modern performance cars simply can't replicate.

There are no electronic nannies. No driver aids. No filters between you and the road. The manual steering rack, lightweight chassis, mid-engine layout, and six-speed manual transmission mean every input matters.

You feel every corner. Every shift. Every movement of the car. The supercharged C30A delivers power with an urgency that makes every drive exciting while the chassis reminds you why the NSX is still considered one of the greatest driver's cars ever built.

It demands your attention. Rewards your skill. Creates a level of connection that's becoming increasingly rare in today's automotive world.

Built by HQ Engineering: The Right Team Matters

The 1992 Acura NSX build was built and put together by HQ Engineering. Wrap and bodywork handled by Aerowerkz. Cage and engine brace by Studio RSR. Carbon fiber pieces by Seibon.

Having the right team matters. Vern didn't cut corners or trust the work to just anyone. Each shop was selected because they understood the vision and had the expertise to execute it properly.

SEMA 2026: The Next Chapter

The car has a couple more items in preparation for SEMA 2026. It will be a booth car in Central Hall with Universal Technical Institute.

In preparation for that moment, the following mods are in consideration:

  • Full carbon fiber doors
  • Full cage upgrade
  • New rear bumper/diffuser setup
  • New wheels and tires
  • Twin turbo setup

The evolution continues. This 1992 Acura NSX build will keep pushing forward.

The Ownership Experience: Caretaker of History

What makes ownership of this car even more special is knowing the history behind it. Vern purchased it from a close friend who took incredible care of it. He views himself as the next caretaker of a piece of automotive history.

While many cars are built simply to be fast or look good, this car tells a story. It's a blend of Honda engineering, JDM culture, motorsports inspiration, movie and video game history, and Vern's own personal journey in the automotive world.

That's not just a car. That's a responsibility. That's a legacy to steward.

Why This NSX Stands Apart

What makes this 1992 Acura NSX build truly unique is that it's legitimately one of one.

There isn't another NSX on the road that combines this level of history, rarity, and customization. From its origins as a car featured in The Fast and the Furious and as a cover car for Forza Motorsport 1, to the extensive blend of rare JDM parts, custom fabrication, and modern performance upgrades, this NSX stands in a category of its own.

Every modification was carefully selected to create a car that reflects Vern's personal taste while honoring the legacy of one of the most iconic Japanese sports cars ever built.

The vision was simple: create a car that people can't help but notice. Whether it's parked at a local meet, displayed at the Acura Grand Prix, or showcased at SEMA, the goal was to build something that commands attention in a sea of supercars, hypercars, classics, and exotics.

The aggressive widebody styling, Mamba Green finish over the original Monterey Blue paint, carbon fiber accents throughout, and over 500 horsepower at the wheels all work together to create a presence that's impossible to ignore.

It's a car that draws people in. Sparks conversations. Creates memories.

Dream Car: McLaren P1

While the 1992 Acura NSX build already represents serious automotive passion, Vern's dream car is the McLaren P1—a hybrid hypercar that represents the pinnacle of modern performance engineering and craftsmanship.

Makes sense. If you understand the NSX as the ultimate driver's car, the P1 is the next evolution of that philosophy applied to modern technology.

Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Car

At the end of the day that's what makes this NSX so special.

It's more than just a car. It's a piece of automotive history. A rolling conversation starter. A reflection of who Vern Lapuz is as a builder, leader, and car enthusiast.

It's a car built to be driven, enjoyed, and shared with others. Every time Vern gets behind the wheel, it reminds him why he fell in love with cars in the first place.

That's the power of a proper build done with intention and respect for what came before.
