So, my name is Danny. At the age of 36 and approaching a midlife crisis, I went ahead and bought a Corsa VXR. I've always been a Vauxhall nut, thanks to my dad (yeah, thanks Dad). The plan was to buy it, tidy up a few bits, and throw a set of lowering springs on it. But as always, things didn't go as planned. One thing led to another, and it quickly spiralled into something greater. So, I fastened my seatbelt and went all in on the build.
What Made You Choose It?
Coming from the peak Max Power era, I think that influence shines through in this build. Clear glass, roll cage, and a mean stance were all part of the vision. I tried to keep the modifications as tasteful as possible. These cars have a bit of a reputation, and I wanted to show the car scene that "Corsas can be cool."
Modifying the VXR
Engine and Performance
One of the first things I did was give the infamous M32 gearbox a new lease on life at A&S Clutch Technology in Halifax. Andy (I think) replaced all the bearings and changed the oil, all in two hours. This guy and what he does cannot be praised enough.
Next up was the engine. Known for Piston 4 problems, it seemed sensible to get it forged, as I plan on keeping the car for the foreseeable future. Rusty Autos was the only place I trusted for this service. Forged Wossner pistons and ARP conrods with a rebore and rebuild did the trick. After the bedding-in period, it was time to make some noise.
I opted for a double decat straight-through exhaust with no silencers and no backbox. My neighbors tell me they enjoy the rumble at 3 AM—I'm not so sure.
Then came more hardware before the inevitable remap, including an Airtec intercooler and a stage one Hybrid turbo CRHA. Off I drove to Norfolk, 300+ miles, to the masters of Vauxhall at Courtenay Sport for a remap. This didn’t go quite as planned. On the third dyno run, the turbo oil seals failed, filling the intercooler with oil—end of mapping session. The cause was a faulty breather inside the rocker cover causing excessive crankcase pressure. That story is yet to be finished with a revisit to complete the mapping.
Exterior Modifications
For the exterior, I got my front bumper smoothed, which really sets the front end of the car apart from the rest. I kept the wide mouth open to showcase the intercooler. I also added a TRC lowline kit, just to make my life a bit more difficult getting over obstacles.
Various grey trims were painted gloss black to keep the look clean and subtly eye-catching. To finish up, I chose a set of 18” OZ Racing rally wheels. I wanted something a little different to set it apart, so I got them painted in a one-off heavy metallic silver. The guy who did them mixed the potion himself and assured me nobody else has this color anywhere. In the sunlight, they shine beautifully.
Interior Enhancements
As a nod to my friends at The Dip Monkey Garage, we painted the backs of the Recaros in Arden Blue with their logo in the headrest section. This really completes the build area with the roll cage. Intermotiv and I worked together to create a clean-looking Airlift build that is pleasant to look at yet still serviceable.
Future Build Plans: Max Power Corsa VXR
While the car is currently in a great place, there are always more ideas brewing. The remap story is yet to be finished, and I'm always on the lookout for subtle tweaks to enhance performance and aesthetics further. It's a journey that never really ends, and that's part of the fun.
Shout Outs
I want to give a shout-out to many of my friends who have supported me, especially the car club I help run, Mods and Stockers, plus all the other Cornwall car clubs. But the biggest shout-out has got to be my wife for putting up with me whenever something goes wrong with the car and for how much she supports my passion and love for it.
Conclusion
Transforming a Corsa VXR into a standout vehicle has been an exhilarating journey. It's a testament to the spirit of the Max Power era and a demonstration that with creativity and dedication, even a Corsa can become a showstopper. As I continue to work on my car, I look forward to seeing where this journey takes me and hope to inspire others to pursue their automotive dreams.
