Meet Justin Chong: From Singapore to the US Car Scene

Justin Chong, a passionate automotive enthusiast, has made a name for himself in the car community through his incredible build of a 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer GT. Originally from the sunny island of Singapore, Justin’s love for cars didn’t take root until he moved to the United States in 2013. Growing up in Singapore, cars were prohibitively expensive, with a simple Honda Civic costing upwards of $150,000 USD. As a result, his exposure to car culture was minimal.

It wasn’t until Justin relocated to Austin, Texas for school that his passion for cars began to grow. Attending car events such as meets, shows, and track days ignited his love for the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) platform, and soon, he found himself not only attending these events but also competing. His 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer GT has become a show-stopping project that reflects his love for cars and his dedication to his craft.

The Start of Justin’s Car Journey

Justin’s first car was a 1999 Honda Civic EX Coupe, a vehicle that introduced him to the world of automotive customization. "I knew nothing about cars when I got the Civic, but it has such a huge aftermarket tuning platform," Justin recalls. He began attending local car meets, which opened the door to a new community of car enthusiasts. These early experiences laid the groundwork for what would become a lifelong passion.

In 2015, Justin purchased a Mitsubishi Lancer GT, initially intending to use it as a daily driver for Uber. However, after just a few months, he realized the car had much more potential. "I stopped driving people around and decided to build it," he says. This decision marked the beginning of an extraordinary transformation, with no expense spared in turning the Lancer into a show car with serious performance capabilities.

Building the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer GT

Justin’s Lancer GT journey began as a stock vehicle, but it quickly evolved into something much more. His goal was clear: to build a car that would not only turn heads at car shows but also deliver on the track. Over the years, the Lancer GT has undergone numerous modifications, making it both visually stunning and mechanically impressive.

Justin is hands-on with his car builds, doing much of the work himself or with the help of friends. "I try to do most of the work either by myself or with the help of some buddies," he says. When the task requires more specialized knowledge, Justin turns to his trusted local shops: Long's Automotive and Guicho's Body Shop. "I'm picky about who works on my car. I believe that what you pay for is what you get, and sometimes a cheap job might not mean a good job."

Modifications and Performance Upgrades

Although Justin has not had his Mitsubishi Lancer GT dyno-tuned yet, he is in the process of making some significant upgrades to increase its power. "The car is currently undergoing 'surgery' to get more power," Justin explains. He's adding cams, a bigger throttle body, and a turbo upgrade, with plans to dyno the car afterward.

Future Plans for the Lancer GT

Though the car is nearing its "final form," Justin acknowledges that a project car is never truly finished. "It’s an endless project," he says. After the current turbo upgrade and engine bay revamp, he plans to experiment with a few more modifications, such as a color change through a vinyl wrap, the installation of a Voltex carbon fiber wing, and possibly removing the rear seats to make room for a roll cage.

Car Show Culture and Inspirations

For Justin, the car show scene is more than just a hobby—it’s a way of life. He draws inspiration from popular automotive publications like SuperStreet and SpeedHunters, which keep him motivated to push the limits with his builds. Justin is also active in the YouTube car community, documenting his car builds, modifications, and event experiences on his channel, The J Media.

The Dream Car: R34 Skyline GTR

Like many car enthusiasts, Justin has his dream car lined up. "My absolute dream car would be an R34 Skyline GTR in Midnight Purple with bronze TE37 wheels and a Voltex carbon fiber wing," he says. The R34 is a tuner car icon, with its potent blend of power, handling, and timeless design. Other cars on Justin’s dream list include the R35 GTR and the NA1 Acura NSX.

Acknowledgements

Justin credits much of his success to the people around him who have helped him along the way. "I'd like to thank Carla for the opportunity to have my car featured in Stance Auto Magazine!" He also expresses gratitude to all his friends and the shops that have contributed to his build.

"And of course, thank you to everyone who has supported me from the start—whether you follow me on YouTube or Instagram."
