Driftcity 2023: A Thrilling Event in Cape Town
Driftcity 2023 was nothing short of spectacular. Months of meticulous planning and four days of preparation led to an event that captivated the hearts of attendees. Despite challenging weather conditions, with a hint of wind and the looming threat of afternoon rain, nothing could deter the event's fervent spirit.
The Grand Parade: A Heritage Venue
Nestled in the heart of Cape Town, The Grand Parade served as the perfect backdrop for this remarkable event. My journey began just after 9 am when I obtained my media accreditation. Stepping through the gates, I was greeted by an impressive lineup of show and stance cars. Our media contingent then convened in the media tent for a briefing led by Jason Williams, the head of media for Driftcity.
A Day of Excitement
The festivities kicked off at 11 am, drawing crowds from all corners of the city. The venue buzzed with activity, offering a plethora of food stalls, and even a children's play area sponsored by McDonald's. Monster Energy had their own setup, providing attendees with the fuel they needed to stay energized throughout the day.
Driftkhana: A Fiery Competition
The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the driftkhana, where competitors battled fiercely. Izak Van Zyl secured the top spot in his powerful Toyota Corolla box shape, with Daniel Blaser close behind in second place. When rain unexpectedly graced the track, the drivers showcased their adaptability, gracefully drifting on the wet surface. It was akin to witnessing art in motion as they navigated the challenging driftkhana track, vying for a spot in the finals.
The Podium Finishers
In the end, it was a remarkable showdown. The podium for Driftcity 2023 saw Daniel Blaser in third place, manoeuvring his 350z with finesse, while Chris Long clinched second place in his Ford Mustang-powered V8 Toyota Auris.
However, it was Kyle Van Dyk who claimed the ultimate victory, taking first place in his daily driver, another impressive 350z. Regardless of the weather's unpredictability, these drifters delivered a spectacular show for the crowds.
Show Cars Galore
The show car exhibition drew a substantial turnout, featuring a diverse range of vehicles. From vintage Datsuns to sleek JDM classics and contemporary models like the C63 AMG and VWs, there was something for every car enthusiast. I had the pleasure of catching up with friends who showcased their cars, some of which have been featured in the magazine.
The event was abuzz with spectators admiring the stunning display and capturing snapshots of these remarkable cars. With some cars sporting air suspension (bagged) and others opting for coilovers, the judges had their work cut out as they evaluated the entries in various categories. As of my writing, the prize-giving ceremony had not yet taken place, but one thing was certain—there were truly exceptional cars on display.
A Gratitude-filled Conclusion
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to event organizer Gary Stockenstroom and the dedicated Driftcity team for orchestrating an unforgettable event. Special recognition also goes to Jason Williams, who handled media accreditation with utmost professionalism, and Mc Vic Pardal, who entertained the crowds and organized exciting giveaways.
