Adin Monroe - 2017 Subaru WRX

I picked the 2017 wrx because it was originally supposed to be my, absolutely no mods, bone stock till I die daily driver. I did the wrx over the sti because I have head gasket issues with my old EJ engine and wanted to use the fa block. It was reliable and it was fun to drive.

Well, my name's Adin Monroe, I’m a 91 Bravo, wheeled vehicle mechanic for the Army. I was born in Washington state, but have since been moved around quite a bit. I have been on active duty for 4 years and counting. In my free time, I have been doing photography work in Nashville, as well as working on my friends and my car! I will say it’s more difficult than it looks to build a car on a military budget, but I’m out here working and trying to make it happen! I got lucky, and got in with @themodgarage, @grimmspeed and @yellowspeedusa who have been my sponsors for a good chunk of time and have been a huge support and confidence booster over the time I have gotten to be with them!

What or Who got you into cars?

It started with my dad, he has been into cars since he was in high school, I grew up always watching him build rock crawlers or street performer cars. I got hooked super young, and when I got old enough, started building a 1999 jeeps Cherokee classic into a daily rock crawler! After that was completed, it blew my mind how far I have come, and everything I have learned. I took that and traded for a 2003 Subaru wrx bugeye because I wanted to go to the street performance side (at the time I was playing a little too much Forza and midnight club). I shortly learned that you shouldn’t be trading cars, Because about 3k miles later. The engine blew up. I definitely learned a great lesson on why you buy stock and build yourself, but, with some help from my dad. I got a new engine shipped over from Japan and put in. I learned so much about engines and mechanics from this I wanted to do more! I drove that for the next few months. And since then I have had several jeeps, civics, BMWs, ect until I decided I needed something that is newer and more reliable. That landed me on a 2017 wrx base model with 10k miles and bone stock off of a Subaru dealership lot.

Why this car?

I picked the 2017 wrx because it was originally supposed to be my, absolutely no mods, bone stock till I die daily driver. I did the wrx over the sti because I have head gasket issues with my old EJ engine and wanted to use the fa block. It was reliable and it was fun to drive.

Why did you build this Car?

So, originally I wasn’t planning on it, and I didn’t want to. But I ended up meeting @big_irv and @carbon_royalty who had insane wrx builds. And that’s really what got my gears turning, and made me decide to do some “slight tasteful modifications” which got me introduced to Brian Millican, owner of @themodgarage. He plugged me up and got me amazing parts from awesome companies at a great price. So I slowly but surely started doing a full build. And now, I have a car that I have been building and working on for just about a year and a half now, and I wouldn’t let it go for the world!

What does it feel like owning this Car?

To start, I just did a 3-inch bumper exit exhaust. So driving it I feel like an absolute unit. I feel confident and proud of everything I have done! And the journey I have taken to get my car where it is! I have met some amazing people and some awesome companies with this car. And made friendships I will never lose! Driving this car is literally taking everything I love about cars, and being able to show it to the world! I love driving through downtown Nashville and getting to see everyone’s reactions whether it be smiles, and cheering, or discussed faces and plugged ears. I love it all. My favourite was we took a cruise downtown and parked at a nearby public park. And there was a little kid walking through our cars looking at them. So I and the guys got to open our doors and let the kid sit in our bucket seats. I let him even start my car and rev up a little bit and the smile that came off of his face made it worth it! It’s not every day you get to see the impact you have on others first-hand.

Advice/Tips

Make sure to start BONE STOCK. you don’t have to worry or stress about the previous owner not doing the parts correctly. Make sure to do your research on whatever car you decide you wanna get and know the ins and outs of it before you leave with it! It also helps to find people motivated and with common interests to help support you in your process.

To start I am very big on the show but I like to have my performance to back it up. My Grimmspeed front mount I think looks great! And definitely helps when you are doing multiple pulls! I highly suggest everyone run yellow speed racing coilovers, they get you amazing fitment and are very adjustable to your drive style and liking! Another big jump came from a Cobb flex fuel kit! Done right, e85 can be a very useful tool to have in your back pocket!

What makes your car Unique?

Well for one I chose high vis lime green for the colour. I wanted a colour you don’t see often and is really bright and visible! I also didn’t do a full wrap, I also overlaid 45° Gloss back stripes to break up the colour and add some personal touch!  On top of that, I have a 3-inch bumper exit exhaust. It’s not too loud but definitely lets the turbo spool and isn’t something you see every day! I have a good chunk of performance parts and have an amazing tune by my guy Tommy at TKautoworks. So along with looking the part, I like to think I can pull my weight pretty well on the track!

I installed my BPV, coilovers, intake, and exhaust. But unfortunately, my tuner isn’t as close as I’d like so I have the big stuff done by him so I could get it tuned the same day.

Future Plans

Always future plans! I’m working my butt off to try and save for an angry acorn wide body kit. I’d love to send my turbo to so cal porting to get redone and built! I’m working on an intake manifold and block as well to try and exceed 550 to the wheels!

Groups/Clubs

I have been a part of @fallskulture in Washington state since I made the purchase of my Subaru! I recently teamed up with @idgas.tm since moving to Kentucky and have been hanging with them a lot!

What do you get from the car scene?

FallsKulture has shown me a ton of love in my process! They have seen me bone stock till now! And continue to show support and motivation for my build as well as I have made some friends that I will never lose no matter where the army takes me! My guys at idgas have plugged me up with some amazing photographers, as well as given me the chance to expand my friend group to the new state! Having people support your build, and tell you they love your car and want to help you get to the next level, is the best feeling you can honestly have! And is 100% of the reason I will never leave the car scene!

Dream Car

As weird as it sounds, my dream car is a late 90’s Lamborghini Diablo, in a school bus yellow with black wheels. I played a ton of car games and it was always available to choose from. As well as it’s one of those cars that is outlandish and nothing really looks anything like it.
