Daniel Maya - 2017 Subaru BRZ

I chose this car because it looked sexy and had that toy car vibe that I was looking for. It was my dream car as soon as I saw it on the streets. Back then, when it first came out, no one knew about the BRZ/FRS and seeing one on the streets was a common misconception with a Porsche or Ferrari.

I’m a college student that always dreamed about having a car like those from the movies that looked like toys. I always wanted that since I got into college, pretty sure like most of the younger audience at least at some point in their lives has had a dream car. Well, my goal was just to make a car that I could feel proud of all the work I will put into it, in order to make it a successful looking “toy car”

I am from the US, originally from Cuba, and here I am standing out for my Cuban folks. I’m currently pursuing a major in Computer Science and Computer Engr, however, that will never distract me from liking and being a car enthusiast as my hobby.

What got you into Cars?

My Dad, even in Cuba, where all the cars that exist are pretty much Chevys, and Ladas. He had a moskvich from 1970. Which back then, that was pretty much all I knew about cars, just seeing those 3 brands. Even so, he loved his car and I saw him always working on it. He did a custom paint job, gold with blue flakes and it was stunning. He always told me that I could learn a few things by watching him do everything but I was not really interested... until I saw fast and furious!

Why did you choose this car?

I chose this car because it looked sexy and had that toy car vibe that I was looking for. It was my dream car as soon as I saw it on the streets. Back then, when it first came out, no one knew about the BRZ/FRS and seeing one on the streets was a common misconception with a Porsche or Ferrari. I loved that vibe that people got from it, thus it got me really interested, even if it was a turtle in a straight line.

Why did you decide to build this car?

Well, the idea came from my wife. She once saw a car with a wide body, and she liked it. She said why don’t you build one for yourself? I’m like that’s a lot of money and time to get it looking like that. She was there and she wanted to help me, so I decided to start getting a list of everything we needed. It was hard to be original on this platform, but something that will capture more attention than anything had to be the colour. Did I wait for the right moment? This company called Inozetek was innovative in the vinyl wrap industry. They came out with some original colours and such a high level of gloss, mirroring a high-quality paint job. So as soon as they unveiled their Turquoise Dream colour, I knew I was the first one to get it on a BRZ/FRS/86. And that’s how it started.

What does it feel like owning this car?

Man, It feels like a privilege. Even though people know it’s a slow car, or for some it might look “ruined”, they actually congratulate me for acknowledging all the hard work and everything done by myself. The wrap, the bodywork, the performance mods, everything. It really warms my heart when I see kids looking at the car amazed and sometimes I let them sit in there. I was a kid too, I completely understand how they feel, and since I achieved my goal, they should start getting some ideas too!

Advice/Tips

Well, I’d say the first tip, before buying any car, is to do research. I know it’s tedious and a bit hard at first, but it will help to get to know all the pros and cons of the ownership later down the road. I usually start by inspecting the vehicle history, how many owners? rebuilt/clean title? what has the car gone through? Mileage, then if everything meets my expectations. I go inspect the car physically, paint condition, how the car has been treated, I test drive them and look for anything out of the normal. This is where the research game plays out. If I like it and everything is smooth like butter, I start negotiating and then the deal.

Well, as far as modifying tips go, there’s only one huge tip I would give anyone modifying a car. Never ever regret buying something, or buy something because someone else said it. You either buy it because you like it or because you love it. It’s your car and if it makes you happy that’s what matters!

What makes your car Unique?

Honestly, the only thing that I think stands out about my car is my colour choice. It’s very hard to innovate on the platform as I said before, and definitely, power and speed is not my strength. In my opinion, this colour is hard to beat as many others have told me and I agree!

Who did the work?

I have done most of all this to build myself and my Dad! I did lots of research, youtube, google and the forums are strong tools! My Dad helped me the most with his old years of experience and strong hammer! My wife supported me through everything and helped me keep my head straight when I needed it. Now I will give a huge shoutout to everyone else that helped me with the small details and make it as perfect as possible! To all my close friends, Madian, Danilo, Paipa, Daniel, and all the others for staying with me and never leaving me when I needed their help!

Future Plans

Definitely will start working on Engine Mods. A little bit of power will not hurt anyone, well, might hurt the engine, but if you do it right, you will do it ONCE. I have no plans on selling the car since this is what helped me throughout my journey and showed me some awesome people in the scene. This car is never leaving me or my heart!

Looking for a new club? Have a look at the ones featured on our site HERE

Groups/Clubs

The BRZ/GT86/FRSEnthusiasts group on Facebook helped me the most! Even though most of the members there are trollers, there are some legit members willing to help you and assist you with any questions you’d have!

What has the scene done for you?

I will also give a huge shoutout to an Instagram growing car community page that is in the works for bringing all the car community together and respect all the builds. No matter if yours come from a junkyard or it’s a golden nugget, you worked hard on it and it deserves to be respected!

The car scene has a lot to learn from the bad side, but it has done so much that it’s easy to forget all the bad. It has brought me new family, new friends, new blown engines, new experiences and such an amazing team! Thank you!

Dream Car

I am never leaving the BRZ platform, but my dream car is a GTR and I'm willing to work my way up to make it look like a toy like this BRZ>!
