Simon Duffin - Volkswagen T4

Simon bought this T4 van 5 years ago when a friend had it for sale, took it for a drive and was hooked. After purchasing all the usual spots that needed attention – being a panel van with windows cut in it was starting to go around the windows as well as a rear arch and both front arches.

Volkswagen T4

“I’ve been into VW’S all my life, it started with a couple of beetles then a couple of bay windows then golfs - mk2s GTI’S, mk4s, a bora, a Corrado g60, I always liked the T4 but couldn't quite get there until this ex AA turned up cheap from a friend” Simon Duffin explained to me. Simon’s had a bit of everything but it always comes back to VW’s.

Simon bought this T4 van 5 years ago when a friend had it for sale, took it for a drive and was hooked. After purchasing all the usual spots that needed attention – being a panel van with windows cut in it was starting to go around the windows as well as a rear arch and both front arches.

Wheels had been changed to Audi alloys and lowering springs had been fitted by the previous owner. The wheels were soon changed from the Audi RS wheels it came on as they were a bit rough and Simon wanted something that wasn’t so common so they got changed for 3SDM wheels as well as lowering it 40mm on Jom coilovers but would like it a little lower.

After the wheels and suspension had been changed Simon also fitted sidebars, mud flaps and the bonnet protector. Simon also fitted the camper conversion including a rock ‘n’ roll bed with help from his father and uncle which helped with the woodwork.

Most of the conversion was found second hand for a bargain, but seeing the van you wouldn’t know it. Simon says “it’s great to have something to sleep in at shows”. After body repairs were done the van got resprayed by Simon’s friend Andy Moore, a close friend with super talents, Simon says Andy is a “one-man-band and a genius with a welder and paint gun”.

Andy did the T4 Ford motorsport blue which suits the van really well and Simon was really impressed with the final outcome. The van is a 2000 diesel 2.5 short wheelbase, originally a panel van Poverty spec, it has been remapped in the past but it is unknown what to, although Simon says “it goes like a scalded cat”. Simon’s favourite modifications are the remap and the tinted windows.

I asked Simon what he liked most about owning his bus and this is what he said, “the waves you get from fellow vanners, they drive really well just like a car and the versatility of them get stuck somewhere you always have a place to sleep”.

He also said the best places are the “many shows all over the place and how chilled and relaxing the community is. No other group of enthusiasts is like them”.

Simon’s final words- “I Hope the scene never changes and would like to say thanks to Andy Moore for his excellent work and to my uncle Michael for help with the woodwork and my dad Mervyn for all his help my mate Tony for selling it to me and big thanks to Redwings horse sanctuary where I work for allowing me to use the site for the photo shoot”.
