Sxetched Illustrations: Showcasing Striking Car Art 

My name is Jared Sears, I’m 32 years old and I am the owner of Sxetched Illustrations. I am a commission artist that specializes in automotive artwork but I also take on logo designs, pet illustrations, and basically anything people throw at me.

How did I get my start? I bought my iPad Pro just to draw for fun and started posting some silly artwork on my Instagram. One of my car buddies asked me to draw his car and the rest was history!  He shared it on social media and I woke up the next day with almost 20 messages and it’s been non-stop since then for the past 5 years now.

After about 2 years in, drawing on my lunch breaks, and the little time I had left at the end of my days. I was able to quit my factory job and go full-time with my artwork. I grew up around cars my entire life. I helped my grandfather work on cars as a kid and as soon as I turned 16 and got my license cars became my life. Including drawing them!

Challenges

Social media can be a scary place. A lot of scammers make my job difficult by creating fake pages of me and taking people's money.  It’s hard enough to trust a business process just from social media. 

Good and Bad Customers

A good customer will know exactly what they want and leave me that little bit of creative freedom to a point where I know I’ll definitely knock it out of the park. They give good feedback and are polite if anything needs to be changed or edited.

As for the bad customers,  they come in all shapes and sizes!  Some can be very rude and aggressive like I’m some sort of art machine that prints on command. Little to no feedback once I’ve sent them their artwork and they just disappear. As far as handling the bad ones,  I quickly remind them that I don’t HAVE to draw for them and can send them back on their search for an artist. I’ve gotten pretty good at sniffing them out right at the start. 

I’ve always told myself if this took off like it has, that I would use it as a stepping stone to much greater things and bigger opportunities, even if it doesn’t have to do with artwork. If it's in the automotive world in general, I’ll be happy. 

Startups are TOUGH!  The humble beginnings of grinding hard and pushing your limit to make it a reality.  It takes time and takes a lot of dedication.  If you want it bad enough, you’ll make it happen.  The amount of free drawings I did at first to help get my name out and my business growing is unsettling! But it worked and I will still throw out a free drawing if the potential to grow further is there. 

I’ve had many cool experiences so far, but the one that always stands out the most for me was seeing my artwork up on the Jumbotron at the annual Daytona Truck Meet.  I’ve also had the pleasure of drawing for a lot of big YouTubers and getting to travel to major car events 

A quote that has stuck with me when it comes to business is the traditional “work hard, play hard”. In this day and age people seem to be forgetting the hard part and only expect to play hard.
