Meet Alex Fraser: From Scaffolding to Car Building

I’m Alex Fraser, also known by my nickname “Alcan,” and I’ve been an advanced scaffolder for the past 18 years. Although I originally trained as a mechanic over 20 years ago, I never completed my qualification. However, my passion for cars never faded. Alongside my day job, I spend my time at the gym and building cars. Recently, I’ve taken up welding, with the hope of being able to build cars from start to finish entirely on my own.

A Lifelong Passion: The Car Scene and VW Corrado R32

Growing up in an area where the car scene was huge, it was inevitable that I’d get into cars. I've always had a soft spot for VW Corrados, so when the opportunity came to buy one in my hometown, I jumped at the chance. Originally, I planned to do a simple engine swap, replacing the 1.8-liter engine with a more powerful R32 V6. But as often happens with projects like these, what started as a straightforward swap quickly evolved into a full build.

The Build: Going "Balls to the Wall"

From Engine Swap to Full Restoration

The Corrado needed a significant amount of welding, so I decided to go all out and make it a complete restoration. The car was painted from top to bottom, inside and out—including the floor, wheel arches, and engine bay. Every part of the car, from the subframes and wishbones to the rear subframe and swing arms, has been powder-coated. Suspension components, brake callipers, and even the hubs have been either painted, polished, or replaced.

The Attention to Detail

The engine has been rebuilt, painted, and fitted with brand-new bolts. The gearbox received the same treatment. The interior is fully custom, with even the plastic components restored to their original black finish. Custom-made Speedline split rims complement the air ride suspension system. I've added a few unique extras to make the car stand out even more, such as custom rear quarter pop-out windows designed by me, and replacing the standard Corrado mirrors with motorcycle mirrors.

A Unique Creation: Built to Perfection

I feel my Corrado is incredibly unique due to the extent of the build—there aren’t many Corrados out there that have been restored to this level of quality. It’s fantastic to drive, with plenty of power, and it never fails to put a smile on my face whenever I take it out for a spin.

Build List: A Comprehensive Breakdown

  • Engine and Performance: R32 V6 engine with an organic clutch, new exhaust and downpipes.

  • Suspension: Air ride suspension system, with fully rebuilt and powder-coated components.

  • Wheels: Custom Speedline split rims.

  • Interior: Fully custom interior with reupholstered seats by Influx, and all plastic components restored to black.

  • Exterior: Custom rear quarter pop-out windows and motorcycle mirrors replacing the standard Corrado mirrors.

  • Brakes: All reconditioned and painted, with every nut and bolt replaced.

  • Additional Custom Work: Every component has been polished, painted, or replaced for a flawless finish.

Who Did the Work?

I built the car myself, with my brother handling the paintwork. The reupholstery was done by Influx. It’s been a team effort, with help and support from a few key people along the way.

Future Plans: What’s Next for the Corrado?

If I decide to keep the Corrado, my next step would be to go down the supercharger route to add even more power. However, I’m already working on a new build—a Vito 368. This one will be a daily driver, so it won’t receive the same extensive treatment as the Corrado, but I’m excited about the project nonetheless. Ultimately, I’m hoping to gain enough support to open my own shop and take my passion for car building to the next level.

Shout Outs: Gratitude and Acknowledgments

I’d like to give a special shout-out to Ray Smith at Classic Vintage and Prestige for all the information and encouragement he provided throughout this build. His guidance was invaluable. I also want to thank my brother for helping me paint the car and various parts, and for teaching me how to paint in the first place.

Dream Car: The E30 M3

My dream car? Without a doubt, it would be an E30 M3—a true icon in the automotive world.
