"This car is what they call smiles per gallon." – Al Allen

From San Gabriel Valley to Building Dreams

Al Allen grew up in the San Gabriel Valley—El Monte, Rosemead, La Puente, Temple City—surrounded by Southern California car culture. A 1995 business college graduate from Concordia University in Irvine, he's now a father of three: 26-year-old twins and a 16-year-old son.

His passion for cars started early, taught by his older brother-in-law who showed him the ropes. His first car? A 260Z that he built into a show car—one that was actually rented by the Fast and Furious franchise as an extra, though it never made it on screen. Still, that experience cemented his love for Z cars and what they represent.

That passion eventually became a business: California Datsun, a shop dedicated to restoring and preserving these iconic Japanese sports cars.

Why the 1972 Datsun 240Z: Still Matters

The Datsun 240Z is an iconic chassis from the '70s that was way ahead of its time. Affordable, lightweight, powerful for its era, and beautiful—it proved that Japanese manufacturers could build world-class sports cars that rivaled anything from Europe.

Here's the thing about these cars: there isn't much that needs to be done to them for them to be fun. The formula was right from the factory. You don't need a thousand horsepower or a full custom build to enjoy what made the 240Z legendary.

That's why California Datsun went with a restoration approach for this 1972 model—keeping the classic drivetrain while giving it a timeless look that honors the original design.

Sunshine Yellow and Euro Bumpers

This 240Z wears its original Sunshine Yellow paint—a bold, optimistic color that screams 1970s California sunshine and good vibes. It's the kind of color that stops traffic and makes people smile.

The euro bumpers clean up the lines significantly. The U.S.-spec 240Z came with large, safety-mandated bumpers that disrupted the car's flowing design. Swapping to slimmer European-spec bumpers restores the proportions Nissan originally intended—sleek, purposeful, and low-slung.

Smiles Per Gallon: Stock Done Right

Al describes this car perfectly: "Smiles per gallon."

The stock L24/E88 engine remains untouched in spirit—OEM build philosophy with smog system elimination for cleaner engine bay aesthetics and slightly improved breathing. The inline-six delivers its signature smooth power delivery and that classic Datsun sound through the rev range.

Behind it sits a 5-speed manual transmission, giving the car proper highway cruising capability while keeping the driving experience engaging. The CV axles and LSD (limited-slip differential) ensure power gets to the ground predictably, especially when pushing through corners.

Modern touches include factory air conditioning—a rarity in vintage sports cars but a necessity for California driving—and LED headlights with dash bulb conversion for improved visibility without sacrificing period-correct appearance.

Restoration Philosophy: Respect the Original

California Datsun's approach to this build was straightforward: restore it properly, upgrade thoughtfully, keep it classic.

The dashboard is new, and the interior received full reupholstery. An Alpine stereo provides modern sound quality while maintaining a clean, understated look. The 280ZX wheels offer a slightly wider footprint than stock 240Z wheels while staying within the Nissan Z family aesthetic.

Underneath, the car received all new stock brakes, steering components, KYB struts, Eibach springs, and urethane bushings. This ensures the car drives like it should—tight, responsive, predictable—without modern coilover setups that can compromise the classic ride quality these cars are known for.

1972 Datsun 240Z:

What Makes This Build Special

Timeless styling and a classic look will never get old. That's the philosophy here.

Every single time this car comes out, it gets a thumbs-up or compliment. People recognize it for what it is—a properly restored piece of automotive history that hasn't been over-modified or turned into something it was never meant to be.

There's a purity to this approach. In an era where "restomod" often means LS swaps, air suspension, and modern drivetrains, California Datsun proves that sometimes the best build is simply bringing a legendary car back to its factory glory with thoughtful, period-appropriate upgrades.

The stock L24 engine doesn't make massive power. It doesn't need to. The 240Z was never about straight-line speed—it was about balance, handling, and the joy of driving a lightweight sports car with perfect weight distribution and timeless design.
