2014 Ford Fiesta ST - A Fun, Affordable Hot Hatch
For someone who grew up in rural Wales, back in the days when a Peugeot 106 could be bought for £100 and then used for either a back-road rally or demolition derby, cheap and cheerful has always been something desirable. And here enters the Ford Fiesta ST!
My uncle always had cars parked outside the house and scattered throughout the village. I recall a photo of him sitting in a Ford Fiesta Mk2 rally car, participating in a local night rally, with the picture adorning his house on the stairs. Every time I walked past it, I couldn't help but admire it. The Ford Fiesta has always been a car I kept my eye on as I grew up.
Why did I choose this car and decide to customize it?
I always enjoyed the story of the Fiesta, the cheap and cheerful family car. As I was on the hunt for a new car, I had a few options lined up. However, I needed to find that sweet spot that made financial sense overall, considering insurance, tax, and other costs. I kept my eye on one advertised at a local dealership for a few months, and I noticed the price decreasing over time.
When a friend came up for a road trip, we made a last-minute decision to check it out. To my surprise, the price had decreased even more when I arrived at the dealership. So, despite it possibly being a rash financial decision at the time, I put down a deposit then and there!
Of course, before the deposit, I ensured that financially, going for this car made sense. Between tax, insurance, and car financing, as well as other monthly bills, the Fiesta seemed like the most sensible choice.

Thankfully, I bought it pre-modified from a Ford dealership! It was clean, but the looks weren't to my liking. After perusing Stance Auto Magazine, I stumbled across a few fantastic cars, including Mikey Rowlands' Ford Focus RS Mk2. The accented colours on that car inspired me to do the same. So, after discovering the vast aftermarket for the Fiesta line, I had options to make it more to my liking.
What it feels like to own this car?
I'll take a front-wheel-drive hatchback any day! To tackle the Evo Triangle or similar winding Welsh roads without worrying about the back end kicking out like a rear-wheel-drive car, it brings the car to life! I'm a dad at the end of the day, so I regret getting the 4-door option, but my kid loves hearing it roar through the winding Welsh valley roads! The downside of owning a Fiesta is being associated with the typical Fiesta owner with a "pop and bang" remap and nothing else done to the car.
What makes mine unique?
Apart from the looks and it being non-stock for the most part, it's still another Fiesta ST at the end of the day. However, it's driven by someone sensible, rather than someone who just passed their driving test and instantly slapped on a "pop and bang" map. No tasteless decals either; I'm trying to keep it as tasteful as possible!
Build List:
- R-Sport induction kit
- Airtec intercooler
- Scorpion exhaust system
- Forge atmospheric dump valve
- OZ racing wheels
- KSB splitter kit
The Work:
I remain loyal to a local garage, even sporting their decal: Star Autogarage. It's a community-driven garage that collaborates with local automotive teams and detailing companies. I love to see local businesses working together and believe in supporting them by doing the same.
Future Plans:
BC Racing coilovers are next on the list. The overall plan was to get it on air suspension, but there's something about BC Racing coilovers that speaks to me.
Advice/Tips:
If it makes financial sense, go for it! Keeping yourself financially stable in the UK's current economic climate seems impossible but achievable. Do your research first and seize any opportunities that come your way. And keep it local!

The Car Scene:
I haven't attended many car meets; in fact, I openly avoid them. I've joined car groups and participated in a group stand at a car show, but I prefer car shows overall. I mainly go to have new options for taking photos of cars and to admire the different tastes and styles that vary within the car scene.
Dream Car:
Financially, I am currently owning my dream car. If money were no issue, I'd go for a Focus RS or some kind of Subaru.
