This story started 9 years ago for Kevin when he bought this 1971 Type 3 Squareback for wife Kirsty as a birthday present, turns out the car's original build date is only a few days apart from Kirsty’s birthday.
The Squareback has been Kevin’s first air-cooled Volkswagen however he has always been influenced by VWs as Kevin left school and worked at the Norwich VW Centre and his VW journey started with a couple of Polo’s but wanted something that wasn’t a beetle, the Squareback was spotted by a friend on eBay, and the car was local so viewing was in order and as soon as Kevin had seen it and had a chance to drive it he knew he had to have it.
The previous owner did some bits to it like the mk1 caddy tailgate formed into the front panel, made the different bumpers and had fitted alloys but the car was fairly original.
Originally the car was yellow, but when Kevin bought the Squareback it was orange with the silver roof which later got changed, but it pretty much got left alone to enjoy to start with. After a year or so Kevin found the body wasn’t as good as it originally looked so the car went through a minor restoration done by Steve Claxton. Steve done a bit of welding fitted a replacement rear wing and bonnet and removed the front scuttle scooped and air-vent intake and repainted it in Volkswagen colours; signal orange with a white pastel roof and dashboard as well as swapping the alloys for steel wheels and whitewall tyre trims.
At the same time, the interior was also changed for a flowery cloth pattern. Kevin’s also added the sun visor, the headlamp eyebrows, and a new exhaust system at which time he got rid of the heat exchangers and has kept on top of the general maintenance. Kevin also had a fellow local Type 3 owner help out with fitting some twin Weber carburettors to liven the car up a little.
Since then Kevin Kirsty and daughter Elise have been enjoying the car as much as they can with the car going to lots of local VW shows loaded with camping gear. The Squareback was also Elise’s choice of car for her high school prom and Elise has now passed her driving test and fancies a go in the family classic and why not the VW scene really is a family ordeal.
I asked Kevin what their favourite and least favoured moment with the car has been and this is what he said; “I love the looks we get when we’re out in it and how loads of people say ‘my dad used to have one of those years ago. I’d love to get it running really well so we can go further in it, it’s only let us down once in 9 years and that only turned out to be a faulty coil. The VW scene is just one big happy family”.
