Meet Ric Holman: A Lifelong Love for Cars

Raised in Sacramento, CA, Ric Holman’s car journey began thanks to his neighbor, whom he affectionately calls his "white pops." This man ignited Ric's passion for cars, instilling a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into every vehicle. "Not all vehicles or styles may be to your liking, but you should respect the work, time, and effort put into it," says Ric. Now, nearing retirement after 30 years of federal service, Ric plans to move to Washington State, where his passion for car culture continues to thrive.

Building a Legacy with His Family

The automotive obsession runs deep in Ric’s family. Both of his sons share his enthusiasm for cars, and they have countless memories working on vehicles together. "Though we may not love the same kinds of cars, we respect each other's opinions," Ric explains. He hopes to pass on this shared love and respect for the automotive world to his grandchildren.

Why the Audi A4 Avant?

Ric’s love for wagons is no secret, and his 2012 Audi A4 Avant was the perfect project car. "I've always been a fan of wagons, and this model was the last of its body style," says Ric. After a car accident totaled his previous 2012 Avant, he found the A4—bone stock and black—and set out to make it his own. Over time, Ric transformed the car, earning it the nickname "The Halfrican" due to its two-tone half-black, half-white exterior. Today, the car shines in a dazzling metallic Sapphire blue, attracting admiration from everyone who sees it.

The First Taste of Car Modding

Before his Audi, Ric’s first deep dive into the world of modifications was with his 1997 VW Jetta GT, which he affectionately calls “Jaundice.” It was his first brand-new car, eventually passed down to his oldest son for restoration. "Rumor is, he'll give it back when he's done, but we'll see if that happens," Ric laughs.

Future Plans for the Audi A4 Avant

Ric’s plans for the A4 Avant are far from over. He has his eye on a bigger turbo, an upgraded transmission, and even a widebody kit. However, he’s aware that all modifications come down to balancing time, money, and practicality, especially as he heads into retirement. “I’ll always be a baller on a budget. I’m not rich; I’m just irresponsible,” he jokes.

Reflections on the Car Scene

Having been part of the car scene since 1997, Ric knows the highs and lows of attending shows and being part of a car club. "It's a crazy world, but it's also a great release from the daily grind," he says. Now, with his family joining him at shows, Ric finds even more joy in the experience. “Winning isn’t everything, but it is nice. Doing shows with family has been a new thing, and I love it.”

Dream Car Goals

While Ric is living his dream with his Audi A4 Avant, he admits that he has his sights set on an Audi RS6 Avant or a 1970 Hemi Cuda someday. “I’m driving my dream car today, but hey, an RS6 or a Hemi Cuda wouldn’t be bad either!”
