A Journey from Inspiration to Innovation

My name is Melvin J. Roman, and my story begins in Puerto Rico, where I grew up before moving to Lemoore, California, over 20 years ago. My relocation was tied to my service in the U.S. Navy, stationed at the base in this quiet little town. After my Navy days, I decided to stay here, eventually becoming an automotive instructor at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA.

Like many of us in the car scene, my love for cars was shaped by the Fast and Furious franchise. Watching Paul Walker and Vin Diesel tear through the streets sparked a passion that’s stayed with me ever since. Their builds inspired a generation to dream bigger, and for me, that dream has always been about standing out from the crowd.

The Vision Behind the Build

When I decided to build my 2022 Kia Stinger GT2, my goal was clear: I wanted something different. In a sea of common builds, I wanted to create a car that would stand apart at shows, a car no one else could compete with.

I’ve owned several vehicles over the years. My first was a 1985 Toyota pickup 2WD, and before the Stinger, I modified a 1981 RX-7. The rotary engine’s unique sound is unforgettable. But this Kia Stinger? It’s special—a true reflection of my creativity and dedication to the craft.

Why the Kia Stinger?

This car is unlike any other in the world. There are only three molded widebody Stingers globally, each sporting a different body kit. Two are in California—mine and my friend Nick Grieco’s—and the third resides in the Netherlands.

A Labor of Love

Most of the work on my car was done by my students and me, with the exception of the exhaust, bodywork, and wrap. Collaborating with my students has been an incredible experience, blending my passion for cars with my role as an educator.

Custom Modifications

Exhaust: It was manufactured by Chris at CMBuildz in Simi Valley for optimal horsepower and sound.
Wraps: Thanks to Tint Pros in Fresno and the amazing Inozetek wraps, my car has sported four stunning colors in just three years.
Performance: Currently, the car boasts 540 AWHP, but I’m aiming to hit 600 with a retune.

Lessons for Aspiring Builders

One of the greatest rewards from this build is inspiring the next generation. Seeing kids admire my car and say, “I want a car like that one day,” reminds me of myself when I was their age. That’s why I always encourage my students to work hard and dream big.

For those starting their car journey, here’s my advice:

Start with horsepower mods—they set the foundation.
Always buy unmodified cars if possible. You never know the quality of someone else’s work, and it could lead to costly problems down the line.

Community and Challenges

The car scene is a mixed bag—full of both supportive individuals and detractors. While there are always those who root for you to fail, I’ve been fortunate to meet incredible people through this community. These friendships, built across diverse backgrounds, are a priceless part of the journey.

The Road Ahead

This Stinger build is far from finished. My immediate plans involve fine-tuning the performance to reach 600 AWHP. Beyond that, my dream is to one day own a resto-mod 1968 Camaro with an LT4 engine—a perfect blend of classic design and modern power.
