A Lifelong Love for Cars and the RX-7
From a young age, Dylan Attard, born and raised in Malta, was captivated by the world of cars. Now 25, Dylan owns two standout vehicles: a Toyota Starlet Glanza V and his ultimate dream car, the 1992 Mazda Efini RX-7 Type R. His journey into car culture began with childhood trips to drag races and classic car shows, where he developed a fascination with performance cars, particularly the RX-7.

“I remember the first time I saw an RX-7 in person. The sleek, classic design captivated me. I told myself, ‘One day, I’ll own one,’” Dylan shares. His love for cars grew stronger with every car meet and race, leading to a lifelong passion. But owning an RX-7 didn’t come easily—Dylan faced numerous challenges, including financial hurdles and years of waiting for the right opportunity. However, that dream never faded, and after years of searching, Dylan finally found his RX-7, which would go on to become one of the most iconic JDM cars in his collection.
Finding the Right Car
A 20-Year Garage Find Turned Restoration Project
In 2017, Dylan got his hands on a 1996 Toyota Starlet Glanza V, a car that quickly became his first serious project. Despite his love for the Glanza, the longing for the RX-7 remained strong.
After contacting several RX-7 owners, Dylan eventually found one willing to sell. This 1992 Mazda Efini RX-7 Type R had been sitting in a garage for over a decade, its once pristine body showing signs of wear. The factory original paint was scratched, and the engine had seen better days. Yet for Dylan, this was the opportunity he had waited for.
“The RX-7 was still in its original paint, but the years had taken their toll. It had scratches, dents, and had been sitting without protection for over 10 years,” he recalls. The car had potential, and Dylan was determined to restore it to its former glory.
Bringing the RX-7 Back to Life
Rebuilding the Engine and Bodywork
Dylan's restoration journey began with addressing the car’s exterior. The body was sanded, small dents were repaired, and it was repainted in its original PZ Brilliant Black. by Daniel Mallia of Ziffa Garage, But the real challenge lay beneath the hood—the rotary engine, known for both its performance and temperamental nature, required a complete overhaul.
“The engine showed wear and tear, so I sent the internals to Nonu Performance, where they were refurbished and balanced,” Dylan explains. Rotary engines are notoriously delicate, and Dylan took great care in ensuring every part was rebuilt with precision. From balancing the rotors to lightening them, each component was meticulously prepared to bring the engine back to life.
The engine bay was also overhauled with upgraded components, including a Garrett G-Series G40-1150 turbo and a Greddy Front Mount Intercooler. After months of hard work, Dylan finally heard the signature “brap” of the rotary engine once again.
Performance Meets Precision
Tuning for 550 BHP
With the heart of the RX-7 rebuilt Dylan didn’t stop at restoration. His goal was to make the RX-7 not only look good but perform at a level that matched its iconic status. Today, his RX-7 pushes an impressive 550 BHP, thanks to an array of high-performance parts.
Some of the key upgrades include:
-
Half Bridgeported Rotary Engine with 3mm Apex Seals
-
Greddy Intake Elbow
-
Garrett G40-1150 Turbo
-
MSD Ignition High Tension Leads
-
AEM Triple Fuel Pumps with ID1000 and ID2600 Injectors
To ensure the car handles as well as it accelerates, Dylan installed BC coilovers, adjustable sway bars, and polyurethane bushings. These modifications give the car the perfect balance of power and control, making it a true performer on both the streets and the track.
Building a Unique Look
A Balance of OEM and Aftermarket
While Dylan wanted to preserve the RX-7’s OEM charm, he also wanted to give it an aggressive aftermarket look. The car now features a FEED AFFLUX Version 2 Front Bumper, FEED Side Steps Blades, and a Scoot Sports Hood. The BBS LM Le Mans 18" wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires add a sleek finishing touch, combining modern performance with classic style.
“The RX-7 already has such a timeless design, but I wanted to add my own touch without taking away from its identity,” Dylan explains. Inside, the car boasts Bride Stradia Lowmax seats and a custom steering wheel, ensuring the driving experience is as comfortable as it is exhilarating.
