Martin Chapman - Audi RS6 Avant
The first ‘performance’ car I owned was a MK3 Astra 2.0 sport, I didn’t do much to that apart from a body kit which I fitted and sprayed myself.

Martin Chapman
I currently live in North Manchester. I’m 54 years young and work as a mechanical installation engineer, installing and maintaining Archimedes screw pumps on wastewater treatment works, a job I’ve done for the last 20 years.
I also play guitar in a rock covers band called Altered State. I’ve played guitar for as long as I can remember.
I’m currently a member of a few car related groups on Facebook, most notably @vagestateowners and @justaudiavants as well as a couple of RS6 specific groups too. Groups are an excellent source of information when you need a helping hand if something is broken, or advice about mods, do’s and don’ts and the best places to get work done that can’t be done yourself
I currently drive an Audi RS6 Avant, a car I dreamt of owning since seeing one on top gear around 12 years ago. I suppose my love of cars started at an early age, my dad always bought the cheapest cars he could, as they were just a means to get to and from work, so it meant he was always tinkering with them and repairing them himself. His motto was always ‘if you can fix it yourself, fix it. If you can’t, bloody learn!’
A philosophy I’ve always tried to stand by. So I learned how to fix cars from helping my dad, he taught me how an engine worked and what to look for when an engine wasn’t running right. When all my mates were reading comics, I was reading all the Haynes manuals my dad had acquired over the years
The first ‘performance’ car I owned was a MK3 Astra 2.0 sport, I didn’t do much to that apart from a body kit which I fitted and sprayed myself. Next came an awesome Mitsubishi Evo 4, I did quite a bit to that, it had a 4” straight through exhaust that would set car alarms off. Had it running close to 400bhp. The only car I really ‘miss’. attended a lot of shows and cruises around that time also being a member of the Evo owners club
A few normal cars came after that, then my love of Audi’s started with an A4 2.0 tfsi, I did quite a bit of maintenance on this car as we were supposed to be doing a road trip around Europe, but unfortunately, we had to cancel. Not long after, I sold that and bought a 4.2 V8 S5, gorgeous car with an awesome sound, but unfortunately two doors wasn’t practical. Then along came my current car, the awesome RS6 Avant in black, it’s the C6 version with the V10 5.0 engine. Nicknamed Steve, as in C6 Steve (love seasick Steve’s music ) practicality for hauling my musical equipment around with the bonus of huge power.
I first saw one on Top Gear, when Richard Hammond raced some snowboarders down a hill and I said to Mrs “I want one of them” then we laughed. I never thought I would be in a position to own one, but never say never and here I am.
It’s standard at the moment engine wise, should be running around 580bhp, but will be getting the engine and gearbox remapped, hopefully see figures going towards 700 bhp. Mods I have done are rear silencers removed, just to hear more of the V10, put in BMC air filters and fitted a set of alloy wheels which are Veemann VC632’s in gloss black, with Uniroyal rainsport 5 tyres.
My favourite toy is the TV so I don’t get bored when Kelly is shopping.
Hopefully next year we’ll do the road trip through Europe, taking in some of the Alpine roads through Switzerland and Austria. I’d love to hear the V10 in one of the many tunnels that we’ll be going through, maybe even see what kind of speed I can do on the German autobahn.
So there you go, dreams do come true.
