In a world where many builders chase trends, Cody Brown has always chosen a different path. Originally raised in Vacaville, California, and now residing in Sacramento for the past thirteen years, the 34-year-old artist has spent nearly two decades refining his craft. As a professional tattoo artist, glass etcher, and graphic designer, Cody's life revolves around creativity, detail, and personal expression. That artistic mindset doesn't stop when he leaves the studio—it carries directly into everything he builds.

Especially cars.

His 1978 Camaro Z28, affectionately known as "Rotten Pumpkin," isn't simply a restored muscle car. It's a bold reinterpretation of a style that once dominated the streets: 1970s lowrider culture.

Built Different — On Purpose

Back in the day, second-generation Camaros were a common sight in the lowrider scene. Today, however, they've largely disappeared from that world—replaced by more traditional platforms like Impalas, Cutlasses, and Regals. And that's exactly why Cody chose one.

"I like to be different. These cars were very popular in the 70s as lowriders, but nowadays you don't see them much anymore. That's what I like—it makes me stand out."

Standing out was the goal. Mission accomplished.

Growing Up Around Real Cars

Cody's connection to cars started long before he could drive. His grandfather always had classic hot rods and lowriders around, and his father owned a beautiful El Camino SS that became a regular part of Cody's childhood. It wasn't just something parked in the garage either—his dad used to drive him to elementary school in that El Camino.

Moments like that stick with a kid. From the sound of the engine to the way people looked at the car when it rolled by, those early memories planted the seed for what would eventually become a lifelong obsession. Cars weren't just transportation. They were identity.

From Import Roots to Classic Muscle

Ironically, Cody's first car wasn't American muscle at all. It was a Scion xB. And like every vehicle he's owned since, it didn't stay stock for long.

"I honestly have modded every single car I've ever had. It's a serious addiction."

Over nearly ten years, Cody rebuilt and redesigned that Scion multiple times. It evolved through different styles and phases until he finally decided it was time for something new. But the xB still holds a place in his garage today—he currently drives another one daily. Some habits die hard.

The Search for a Real Z28

The Camaro didn't come easily. For three to four years, Cody searched for the right car—specifically a real, matching-numbers Z28 that hadn't been completely rusted out or butchered over time. Finding one in good condition proved challenging.

Eventually, though, the right opportunity appeared. The car was a California-original 1978 Camaro Z28 with a simple history: the first owner had parked it in his driveway and let it sit for years, the second owner began restoring it before eventually moving on, and then Cody stepped in. That's when the transformation began.

A Camaro You Won't See Twice

The Camaro world has no shortage of builds. Many are restored to factory condition, some become pro-touring track monsters, and others turn into drag strip bruisers. But a true lowrider Z28? That's almost unheard of. And that's exactly what makes Rotten Pumpkin so special.

"I can go to a show and be the only Camaro lowrider there."

He isn't exaggerating. At most events, Cody's Camaro is the only build like it anywhere on the show field. And that uniqueness is intentional.

Engine & Drivetrain: Small Block Power Meets Show Quality

At the heart of Rotten Pumpkin sits a rebuilt 350 Small Block Chevy, staying true to the car's muscle car heritage while delivering reliable performance. The engine has been completely refreshed internally and externally, featuring a mild performance cam and a meticulously detailed engine bay.

The engine compartment blends performance with craftsmanship, featuring chrome fender braces, a chrome air cleaner cover, and 24-karat gold hardware throughout the engine bay. The fully refinished engine compartment extends to the hood underside, creating a show-quality presentation that draws attention whenever the hood is lifted.

Suspension & Hydraulics: Classic Lowrider Setup

This Camaro rides exactly the way a true lowrider should. The car runs a full hydraulic suspension system capable of front, rear, front-back, and pancake movement—allowing it to perform classic lowrider tricks while maintaining a period-correct appearance.

The setup features Fenner "Minnie Winnie" hydraulic pumps, which are correct for the 70s era and provide that authentic lowrider experience. The full front and rear hydraulic system includes a rear suspension bridge, custom rear coil setup, and mono-leaf rear suspension conversion. Custom-painted shocks and a chrome-plated differential cover with 24-karat gold hardware complete the suspension package.

Hydraulic work was completed by Robert Pascua in Stockton, California, with pump plumbing handled by Mike C. The result is a suspension system that blends classic lowrider mechanics with modern reliability.

Wheels & Tires: Period-Correct Rolling Stock

No lowrider build would be complete without the right wheel setup. Cody chose classic hardware that perfectly complements the car's vintage style: 14x6 Tru Ray Straight Lace wheels wrapped in Remington 175/70/14 whitewall tires. The wheels are finished with 1959 Impala 24-karat gold hubcaps that instantly evoke the boulevard builds of the 1970s.

The braking system maintains the classic setup with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, keeping everything period-appropriate.

Interior: Gold Accents and Custom Craftsmanship

Inside the car, the theme of gold accents and custom craftsmanship continues. The entire cabin has been restored and refined from the carpet to the headliner, featuring numerous custom touches throughout.

The cockpit features a custom Chevy logo steering wheel in a compact eight-inch diameter, with 24-karat gold hardware across the cabin. Custom gauge cluster knobs, gold dagger-style tilt column, and gold blinker arms add premium touches throughout. The fully restored interior upholstery maintains the classic aesthetic.

Audio remains simple but effective with a Kenwood Bluetooth head unit and Kenwood 6x9 rear speakers behind chrome organ-style speaker covers. The interior perfectly complements the car's vintage lowrider character without overdoing the modern tech.

Exterior: Living Up to the Name

The exterior is where Rotten Pumpkin truly lives up to its name. The car wears a vibrant custom copper metallic paint scheme, enhanced with pinstriping across nearly every body panel.

The custom mural painted on the Z28 hood scoop was completed by Sergio Chavez from Woodland, California, while Cameron Bartlett from Yuba City, California, handled the extensive hand-striping throughout the car. The rear gas door has been molded with an orange plexiglass window, revealing a custom chrome gas cap beneath.

The end result is a car that feels equal parts muscle car, lowrider, and rolling art piece.

Built by Hand

One of the most impressive aspects of Rotten Pumpkin is how much of the work Cody himself completed. From mechanical work to gold plating and fine detail touches, he handled nearly everything personally. Paintwork, engine work, detailing, and fabrication were all done by Cody's hands.

Even the custom glass etching seen throughout the car was done by Cody through his own business, Magic Touch Glass Etching. The Camaro is truly a hands-on build from start to finish.

Future Plans

Despite the extensive work already completed, Cody isn't finished. Future upgrades include an orange velvet biscuit-tuck interior with paint-matched seat backs, additional custom murals, and more gold plating on undercarriage components. Like any true project car, Rotten Pumpkin continues to evolve.

The Lowrider Community

Cody proudly represents Relentless Car Club in Sacramento, California. The club reflects the values Cody appreciates most in the car community—loyalty, respect, and a shared passion for building something unique.

While Cody enjoys all aspects of car culture, lowriding will always hold a special place in his heart. "People are loyal, super nice, always giving and always willing to help." That sense of community and shared passion is what keeps the culture thriving generation after generation.

Dream Builds

Cody's interests span multiple automotive styles. Future dream builds include a chopped-top lowrider, a pre-runner off-road truck, and anything creative and unique that sparks inspiration. Because for him, building cars isn't about fitting into one category—it's about expression.

Final Words

Cody keeps his philosophy simple: "Do what you love and just have fun. Cars come and go, but the memories stay with you."

And Rotten Pumpkin? That's more than a car. It's a rolling reminder that the best builds come from passion, creativity, and the courage to do something different.

r0cean11 Photography began as a simple hobby for me—something I explored out of pure curiosity and passion. Twenty-four years later, it has grown into one of the defining parts of my life. Before stepping fully into automotive photography, I spent years building cars for SEMA. I photographed my own builds and projects long before I ever considered taking the craft seriously. That all changed when my last build was totaled; from that moment, photography became more than an interest—it became my purpose. ----------- Today, I shoot and write for Stance Auto Magazine, PASMAG, 742 Marketing Events, Super Lap Battle, Global Time Attack, RACEWORZ, and a wide range of automotive events across the United States. ----------- To me, automotive photography is more than capturing a vehicle—it’s about telling the story that lives within it. Every builder leaves a piece of themselves in their car, and my job is to honor that by showcasing their vision through my lens. ----------- You’ll find my event coverage, feature shoots, and automotive storytelling across all my platforms. I’m always open to connecting, answering questions, and collaborating with builders, enthusiasts, and fellow creatives. ----------- I am also a Partner with Stance Auto Magazine, serving as the Director of Marketing and Media. ----------- Facebook (Personal): Donald Rochin (Donnie Roc)
