Meet James Dolan

Hi, I’m James, and I drive a 2023 Honda Civic Type R. I’ve had this FL5 since mid-2024, and so far, I’ve done a small handful of modifications… for now.

I’ve always had a thing for Civics. When the time came to part ways with my RX8 R3, I originally set out to buy an FK8. But right around then, Honda started teasing a new version of the Type R. That car turned out to be the FL5, and the moment I saw a photo of it, I fell in love.

Why I Chose the FL5 Honda Civic Type R

The FL5 immediately stood out to me with its cleaner, more refined design. It still carries the iconic Type R DNA but with a more mature edge. I picked it up as soon as I could, and a year into ownership, I’m still head over heels for it.

Even though the car is still relatively tame on paper, I’ve made a few tasteful changes that really transform its personality—both on the street and at shows.

Key Modifications to My FL5 Type R

Here’s what I’ve done so far to the build:

• PRL Motorsports Intake & Intercooler – improves throttle response and lowers intake temps.

• PRL Coolant Tank – keeps temps in check during long drives and summer heat.

• Full Milltek Exhaust System – sounds absolutely incredible; deep, crisp tones without the drone.

• Aeroflow Dynamics V2 Front Lip – adds aggressive styling and a nice aero touch.

• Ultra Black Violet Vinyl Wrap – more than just cosmetic; it’s deeply personal.

• AirLift Performance Management System with AirRex Struts – the heart of my custom suspension.
  
  

The Story Behind the Ultra Black Violet Wrap

The wrap is one of the most striking features of the car, and it means a lot to me personally. It was inspired by my late mother, Róisín, whose favorite color was purple. The original Championship White was clean, but I wanted something with heart—and Ultra Black Violet delivered just that.

At first, I wasn’t 100% sure about it. But after taking the car to various shows and events—and hearing all the positive feedback—it really grew on me. The wrap was done by my friend Tom over at Studio Wraps, and I couldn’t be happier with the finish.

One of the highlights was winning a trophy at TunerFest South while showing with Obsession. That moment validated everything for me.

The Influence That Started It All

Like many of us, The Fast and the Furious was the spark. I watched it for the first time with my cousin, and when I saw those black Honda Civics rolling deep with green underglow, I was hooked.

From there, Need for Speed Underground cemented my love for modified cars and stanced builds. That influence still carries through to this day.

My FL5 is Built for Me, Not the Track

Some folks feel strongly that a Type R should only be built for the track. But my build is for me—it reflects who I am and what I love about car culture. Whether it's aired-out at a meet or cruising to an event, the car brings a smile to my face every time.

The air suspension setup—AirLift Performance paired with AirRex struts—was installed by the amazing team at Dream Automotive. They’ve played a huge role in helping me shape the car into what it is today. The ride quality is phenomenal, and it gets the exact stance I wanted.

What’s Next for the Build?

The next step? Wheels. Honestly, that’s the hardest decision for me. There are so many options out there, and I want something that balances style, fitment, and function. If anyone has recommendations, feel free to hit me up!

Once the wheels are sorted, I’ve got even more ideas lined up—possibly custom interior work, lighting upgrades, and a few surprises that’ll make the build even more personal.

When I’m Not in the Driver’s Seat...

When I’m not attending car shows, photo shoots, or community events, I manage a marina on the South Coast. And when I’m not doing that, I’m dancing with my daughter, Betty—she’s my world.
