Meet the Owner: Asael Granados’ JDM Journey Begins

My name is Asael Granados. I was born and raised in the heart of Dallas, Texas, and I’m currently 18 years old. When I’m not working in the hardwood flooring industry or playing soccer, I spend my time wrenching on something that means the world to me—my 1971 Datsun 240Z.

You can follow my automotive journey on Instagram at @240.datsun, where I document the restoration and evolution of this iconic Japanese classic. Interestingly, I wasn’t always into cars. That all changed after attending a local car show in Ennis, Texas. That experience opened my eyes—not just to the vehicles themselves, but to the culture, the community, and the passion that brings enthusiasts together. I came to understand that cars are more than machines—they’re expressions of identity, storytelling on wheels, and symbols of dedication.

How I Got My Dream Car for Free

I didn’t set out looking for a dream car—my 240Z found me. Quite literally. It had been sitting in a garage where we used to live, collecting dust and long forgotten. When I asked the owner what he wanted for it, he surprised me with an offer I’ll never forget: I could have the car for free, under one condition—that I take him for a ride once it was running. That moment marked the beginning of everything.

This is the first car I’ve ever owned, and it’s been the driving force behind my passion for automotive restoration. There’s something incredibly special about owning and driving a car that most people my age have only seen online or in car magazines. Whether it's parked in the driveway or on display at a meet, it never fails to spark conversations—and I love sharing the story behind the build.

To anyone considering starting their project car: know that it’s possible. Talk to people. Build relationships. Do your research. Inspect the engine, check the frame, and create a plan before investing a single dollar. Set a budget, define your goals, and be prepared for the unexpected. Things will go wrong—that’s part of the process. But it’s all worth it.

Every bolt turned and every part installed made this car feel even more like an extension of who I am.

What’s Next for the Z?

I have no intention of ever selling this Z. I plan to continue refining and upgrading it while staying true to its original character. A rear wing and a new set of wheels are next, but the essence of the car—what it represents and how it came to me—will never be lost.

This journey has introduced me to people who inspire and challenge me, not just as builders but as individuals. It’s proof that with passion, patience, and faith, anything is possible.

Final Thoughts: Faith, Cars, and Community

As for my dream car? A 1995 Mazda RX-7 in pearl red. But for now, the Z is everything I could’ve asked for—and more.

Always put God first in your plans. With Him, anything is possible. There will be setbacks, but stay faithful. Because, in the end, the journey is truly as important as the destination.

ihatework_ I’ve spent over a decade behind the lens, capturing the stories of both the cars and the people who bring them to life in the automotive world. My work has been featured in Streetlow Magazine, Minitruck Era Magazine, and most recently, Stance Auto Car Magazine. Through these platforms, I’ve had the privilege of documenting some of the most creative, dedicated, and passionate builders in the scene. What drives me is the relationship between the builder and the build. Every vehicle tells a story — of time, dedication, and vision — and my job is to bring that story into focus. I strive to capture not just the finished product, but the emotion, detail, and pride poured into every inch of the ride. These aren’t just cars to me — they’re art, and I treat them with that same level of care and respect every time I shoot. At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to honor the builder’s work and make sure their story is not only seen, but truly felt.
