"My car is a reflection of myself." ~ Savannah Stroud

Unleash Your Inner Speedster: Exploring the 2015 Subaru STI Launch Edition

Hi, my name is Savannah Stroud, and I am 33 years old. I am a mother to my three amazing children: Madison (17), Bailey (13), and Jaxson (10). I am married to my best friend, Spencer, who is my biggest fan, supporter, and all-around rock. I am from Dallas, Texas. My day job, aside from being a mommy and a wifey, is as an admin at my husband's family jewelry store. It's funny because it's the complete opposite of who I am. I am far from girly.

Don't get me wrong; I love my mascara and eyeliner at the end of the day, though I would prefer to have tools in my hand, working on my car, in it, on it, or even on top of it, lol. I am not your average minivan-driving soccer mom. I love it when I get to pick up my kids from school in the Subie. All the kids tell my kids, "Your mom is so cool," or they ask me to rev my engine or how fast can you go? I love it all, and even if my kids won't admit it, they love it too.

Everyone asks, "How does a girl get into cars?" Well, in my case, my Granddad owned an auto parts business before there was AutoZone or O'Reilly's. I grew up around anything car-related with my Grandmother, even working at the front desk, and there are pictures of me as a baby in a playpen up in the front office. When I became older, he showed me tools and parts and how to tinker.

Let's just say I use that in everything I do every day of my life. Every guy I ever dated had a modified car. It was a staple in every relationship for me. When I met my husband 14 years ago, he really gave me the full motivation and creative capability to start modifying my very own first car. I had a Honda Civic EX automatic (I know, gross). I then went on to modify several Honda SIs, which eventually led to me getting the Subaru. And let's just say I took off running and haven't stopped, and don't plan on it.

I have been asked so many times, "What would you sell the Subie for?" My answer is and always will be, for nothing. Then they will ask, "What if someone offered you $1 million for it?" My answer would still be, it's not for sale. My car is not just a car to me; it is a representation of myself, my family, and my friends. There were only 1000 of my car made. While similar to other Subarus, the launch edition has a lot of features not available on other models. Now, while this is my first Subaru, and I do want another in the future, I am so in love with all the ups and downs of owning a modified Subaru.

My very first car was a 2002 Alero Oldsmobile. My parents bought it for me, thinking it would be safe for me to drive with my newborn daughter. And then I went to a Ford Focus. Then a very long list of different Hondas, like a '92 Prelude or a 2008 Civic SI, 2012 and 2014 Civic SI. While my current daily driven car is a 2018 Honda Pilot, or I call it my "Mom Mobil." The Pilot is comfortable to drive with a car full of kids. But I would prefer to drive my Subie. I absolutely love all the heads that get turned.

Or the number of people who can't believe a girl drives it. One day I was driving home with my husband in the passenger seat. A cop pulls out behind us, and my immediate reaction is I'm getting pulled over. He then gets over, and we come to a four-way stop. He rolls his window down and hollers, "Nice car." I smile, and Spencer says it's hers. He then says, "No way, nice work," and drives off with a big smile on his face. Every time I think of that moment, it makes me smile. All around driving her makes me smile.

What it feels like owning this car

My absolute favorite thing in the world is the reaction I get when I start talking to men about my car. They don't expect me to know what I know. Then I can see them switch from just talking to a girl to really being involved in the conversation and answering their questions. Being a girl in a mostly men's world makes men think I don't know the things I do until I start talking. Their response is always, "Wow, you really do know what you're doing." That response has come up more times than I can count.

The Work

While I am a very hands-on person and prefer to do all my own work, I know my limit or what I can and cannot do. But I can promise you that if I don't know how to do it, I will be right there watching and learning.

What makes my car unique

Why do I think my car stands out? Well, I believe it's because I have a keen eye for the small details. While big upgrades provide big power and big attention, I believe it's the small things that really make everything flow into one. Things like every bolt under my hood is upgraded.

This took about 12 hours of labor. And how I have matched all the colors. Then there are the not so little things that you might not know. Like every pipe under my hood is custom-built to fit my exact setup. How I have the ability to run an upgraded turbo and a front-mount intercooler with my bumper and fog lights that I want? I have the new Cobb Redline carbon fiber cold air intake with an 84mm turbo. Another thing is the amount of carbon fiber I have on my car. It's like an addiction. I didn't get the name Carbon Queen for nothing! If it's carbon fiber, I have it, or I plan on getting it!

Advice/Tips

I am a true believer in building your car for yourself. Build it as a representation of who you are. People will always ask you for tips and advice. My biggest advice is to do what you love and remember that Rome was not built in one day. Everyone is in different stages of their life.

Therefore, everyone gets different outcomes. While my kids are mostly grown and are more self-independent, some of my other friends' families have younger children. This means I have more time to do the things that I love, while their focus might be more on their family's needs at that time. This does not mean that we don't both share the same love and passion or that my build is superior to anybody else's. My other tip is to always share your wealth and opportunities.

If I get invited to something or have the opportunity to give, I will. I will always share, whether that is my time, information, abilities, or all-around friendship. There is too much hate in this world for me not to be nice. For example, I know several other car enthusiasts that if you ask them for their wheel specs, they won't share. Why, though? Why not share what you have learned? Why not let everyone enjoy the same passion?

Future Plans

Future plans for the Subie include a bigger brake upgrade, a new one-piece driveshaft, a headliner and finishing system, and trunk setup. Wheels are currently getting a custom powder coat design. Also, a custom paint job and some more carbon fiber parts are in the next chapter. While I think I will always find things to do on the Subie, I am in the market for a '92-'93 Nissan 240. I want to learn to drift.

Shout Outs

I really want to give thanks to my husband Spencer @Darkstar_s2k for all his help and support. It truly is a blessing to have someone who has your back and supports your passions. I also want to thank my friends Chris Aston @slowst.33 and Hunter Chovanetz @nobodys_86.

All the time and support you both have put into me, my car, and our friendship. It truly is a blessing to have y'all in my life. I want to thank my parents and my siblings for always supporting me and listening to me ramble about cars, even when I knew y'all had no interest in what I was saying, lol. I want to give a special thanks to Shawn and Alicia Rizzo and the team @krakenmotorsports. The work y'all have done to my Subaru and the sponsorship is truly amazing.

Thank y'all for investing in me and my dreams and ambitions. I look up to you too. I appreciate y'all welcoming me and my family into yours. Y'all have the best performance shop in the world. And thank you to Calvin and Suzanne Dotson @dotsontuning for providing me with the best and healthiest tune.

The Car Scene

Make sure you follow my build and my crew's builds on Instagram @kraken_show_team. There are a variety of amazing buildings and amazing people there. Being part of such an amazing team and amazing community truly is a blessing. It has brought great joy and happiness to me. The people I have met and get to hang out with on a daily basis really are a family. All the opportunities these people have brought me and my family are like no other.

Being able to raise my kids around the car community really has shown my kids to love and respect everyone's passions and interests. I do know my life would not be the same without all the amazing people I have met along the way. Thanks to all of y'all, I get to drive and build my dream car every day.

To all my fellow women and men car enthusiasts, I want to leave you with this: "Do not put out your fire because someone else doesn't understand your flame."

love,

savannah
