1962 Scorpion GTZR - 250 GTO Tribute

Born in 1965.  I bought my first car at age 14, a 1970 Firebird race car. Got hooked on cars. I have owned 250+ different collectors, race, sports, and vintage cars, of all kinds.  I started a company building custom cars for clients. One thing I always wanted to do is built a custom tribute from the ground up frame, suspension, body, start to finish.  I loved the iconic 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO

Only a small handful of very wealthy people can afford one of the only 36 made. So I decided to build my own.  Growing up in Arizona I was used to seeing scorpions all over.  The scorpion is an amazing little creature. Then one of my all-time favorite rock groups “Scorpions” filled my ears and mind with awesome music. And they still do. The name scorpion stuck with me.  I own a property maintenance company and started it about 31 years ago. My wife Raquel and I enjoy our country home, horses, cars and our friends and family.

The 1962 250 GTO has for many years been an awe-inspiring work of automobile art and design. The race history of the 250 GTO is extensive and intriguing, to say the least. Most say it is the most coveted automobile ever built.  My love for vintage racing cars, Ferraris, Maserati, Alfa, and many others. Two of my favourite cars to drive daily are the S-30 Datsun 240z and the 510.  So I came up with the name of my car- Scorpion GTZR.

The Scorpion- an amazing living creation.  The “GT” came from the original car, it is a Grand Touring car.  The “Z” came from the fact that I used the top of a 1971 S30 Datsun Z car so I could use the windshield and top, and door shells which are fitted and welded to the custom frame. I only used what I call the “top hat “ of the Z.  The -“R” was added as I built this car as a fully functional Race car- hence - “GTZR”.

This is a 100% one-off custom-built tribute to the awesome 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.  A friend and I designed the frame together and mated the top hat of the S30 Z to the frame. I personally hand-laid the whole body with my moulds. I also custom cut, lengthened, widened, and made several new needed body parts. The Scorpion is the same wheelbase as a 250 GTO. I hand-made many parts that the car needed. I acquired through Jim all the Ferrari lights that are on the car.  I used a Wilwood brake system custom-made with several suspension parts.

Used a Tremac 5-speed. My good friend John Pillar  ( a very well-known race engine builder, racer, and car builder built my custom Chevy 350 motor. Motor approx HP 550, Torque 500 ft lb. This full roller motor revs over 8000 and goes right back to purring like a lion.  the Scorpion weighs approximately 2100 lbs. Another very good friend Jim Simpson built the special functional hood to extract heat from the engine bay and also helped out with many other tasks I had on this custom car. The custom-built Alloy barrel/ stainless spoke rims were made by Dayton wire wheel.

I wanted the interior to be inspired straight from the cockpit of the 250 GTO,  so I bought seats, installed the custom dash, and installed an 8-point roll cage. I purchased a Ferrari shift gate, shaft, and ball from Jim Simpson and custom-fitted it to the Tremac, it works excellently.

The diamond upholstery work was done by Ty and Gary at TrimCraft. It took about 7- 8 years to build the Scorpion. It has been a dream come true for me to build a custom car from the ground up to drive it.  The weight-to-power ratio makes driving this beast of a car a full adrenaline rush. And all the custom suspension makes it handle incredibly. There is so much more that went into this one-off custom build way too many things to list.

I hope that everyone enjoys my story and the dream car I built. My Scorpion GTZR is a one-off 100% custom hand-built tribute to one of the most iconic cars ever built. It was my dream car to build. and it has been an amazing experience, one I will not forget and one in which I learned so many things during the build. I always have a deep appreciation for those few close friends who helped me along my build.
