Meet Erik Gutierrez and His 1997 Toyota Supra

Hey, I’m Erik. I drive a 1997 Toyota Supra—yes, the legendary 15th Anniversary Limited Edition. It’s a left-hand drive model, painted black with rare gold emblems, making it one of the most unique and rare Supras still seen on the street. When I’m not out cruising or hitting car meets, I’m working in the medical field. I’m a respiratory care practitioner specializing in NICU and labour and delivery, working with preemies, infants, and adults.

When the pandemic hit, it was my first year on the job—talk about trial by fire. It was terrifying, but I’ve grown so much since then. I’m still in school too, pushing to improve my career prospects. Outside of work and studies, I’m an outgoing guy who loves to make people laugh. I truly believe that a smile or a laugh can ease someone’s stress or brighten their day. And when I’m not doing that? You’ll find me spending time with my family, hanging out with friends, or taking the Supra out with the boys for a good cruise.

Why the Supra? Not Just Because of Fast & Furious

Most people assume I picked a Supra because of Fast and Furious, but that’s not the case. My love for Supras started when I downloaded a street racing video featuring a Supra racing a Mustang. That sound—the unmistakable 2JZ roar—blew me away. From that moment, I knew I had to own one.

Growing up, my stepdad would work on our cars, and I learned to drive stick on a 2001 Toyota Celica. I always had a thing for JDM cars, but that Supra sound stuck with me. As I got older and learned about the legendary 2JZ-GTE engine, my fascination grew. I was hooked—especially on how the car shoots flames from the exhaust. It’s a straight-up beast.

I even took auto mechanic classes in my 20s and learned how complex these cars are. I was amazed by all the parts and systems involved. But as much as I loved it, I also realized I wanted more—I didn’t want to break my back working under cars. I wanted to be able to afford one, build it, and live the dream.

Choosing Between the R34 Skyline and the Supra

It came down to two legends: the R34 Skyline or the Supra. People gave me mixed advice, and I struggled to decide. But the Supra kept calling to me. That sound... that feel... there’s just something about it you can’t explain. A Supra is a Supra. I finally pulled the trigger—and then realized just how expensive it is to build one to my standards.

The engine is fully built around the transmission, rear differential, and ECU. It runs flex fuel—both pump gas and E85—and is capable of producing over 1300HP. Right now, I’m keeping it at around 800HP, and it’s still an absolute monster.

What Makes It Unique

It’s a Left-Hand Drive 1997 Supra 15th Anniversary Edition, black with factory gold emblems—something you don’t see every day. It’s not just a show car; this build is street-driven and meets-ready. The LHD version itself is a rarity, but to have one in this condition, with this power and authenticity, sets it apart from the crowd.

Without car meets on weekends, you'd hardly spot something like this out in the wild. That’s part of what makes the car scene so special—you meet other enthusiasts, share stories, and see dream cars come to life.

Future Plans for the Supra

Eventually, I want to repaint the car and get it fully PPF’d (paint protection film) to keep it looking brand new. Once I have my own garage, that’s when I’ll give it the full makeover. I also want to build a second engine and have it on standby—ready to go if I ever want to push things further.
