2009 Nissan GT-R35 - Gaz Hingley

I love Porsche but there was no way I could fit a wheelchair in the boot, so the next fastest supercar that can accommodate a chair was a Nissan GTR R35 I needed something that could give me the same feeling as a bike would.

I have always been an adrenaline junkie, for as long as I can remember I’ve always loved cars, bikes and trucks, whether it be driving them or watching them race.

About 11 years ago I was out on my GSX R 1000 when I had an accident which left me paralysed from the chest down T3/T4 complete. I thought that was the end of my time on 2 wheels and anything that was fast, apart from watching from the sidelines. I did manage to attend 2 track days on a bike with the help of a charity called “The bike experience” they have specially adapted motorbikes that paralysed riders like myself can go and enjoy being back on a bike, you get velcroed onto the bike and you have a catch and release friend on track with you.

They are there to hold the bike in place for you to start off and then they catch you when you finish and hold you upright. This was such an amazing feeling. Free riding around the track was the closest I could get to that feeling again. After practising driving a car with hand controls my craving for speed never left.  As a bike was out of the question now (for road use), I decided to look for a fast car.

I don’t mind being chauffeured around by the wife but sometimes she’s like driving miss Daisy. I wanted to be back behind the wheel of my own car. I wanted a bit of independence back. I love Porsche but there was no way I could fit a wheelchair in the boot, so the next fastest supercar that can accommodate a chair was a Nissan GTR R35 I needed something that could give me the same feeling as a bike would.

So, I searched for a long time to find the perfect one, I had white in mind but when I saw this one, I fell in love with it straight away, The previous owner had kept it in his garage and cleaned it within an inch of its life. She was immaculate

This is how I knew I wanted this car; I was the exact same way with my bike or cars I had, I knew this had been looked after and I would also look after it the same way. The car had already had stage 4 engine mapped which made it a bit more appealing than a standard one. The wheels are unique, it was just all around a mint car.

For the 1st few years, I didn’t do much in the way of an engine change, but then I felt like it needed more power. When having the hand controls, I didn’t have 100% throttle to the hand, so with the engine build and upgrades taking place SVM managed to adjust the controls to allow me to have 100 % throttle.

That’s what makes this a unique car, it can be driven with hands or feet. It feels amazing every time I get in the car just starting it up, brings that same smile to my face I had when I used to put on my bike leathers. The speed just adds even more joy when I’m out on the road.

It's running at 900 bhp Or a few more horses on Ethanol she is fast. I love the looks I get from passers-by, and people I overtake, and taking a second glance, people who don’t know what the car is stopped and ask. I love showing the engine off when we’re at shows. Or parked up at car meets. It gives me the biggest smile to see people in awe of the car, My car, This car I can drive every day. A car some people could only dream of having or taking a ride inside.

We take a few friend's children to their Proms or friends to their weddings, we never charge for this as it is a privilege to be asked to do it and we will continue to do this as long as we have the car. Before covid we would join in with a few cars meets per year some being with Battalion 35. They always drew in a big crowd. Lots of charity events also.

The car fills me with pride whenever I’m out in it or just cleaning it in the garage. The dream car would be a Lamborghini Aventador but like with the Porsche there is no room for the wheelchair unless I use the passenger seat. Don’t think the Mrs would be too pleased.

What do you think?
