Cameron Nicol - 1987 MK1 Volkswagen Caddy
Having a car that is on air suspension that you don't normally see is quite entertaining especially when you go to your local shopping centre and see everyone breaking their necks just to stare at your car. Something about breaking the norm of car culture especially here in South Africa is very satisfying,

The VW and V.A.G. scene has exploded the world over and no wonder with some fantastic fast and stylish cars, VW has always had that special spot, ever since the old days with the Golf GTI, which is still its number one seller, with the older models highly sought after, V.A.G. as it is known as in the car scene, is Volkswagen and Audi, covering a wide base of cars, allows the scene to create some wonderful builds below being a fine example.
The MK1 Caddy was released in 1979. It was first introduced in Europe in 1982 till 1995. Here in South Africa, the Caddy was made until 2007. It is very popular here in South Africa that the prices for them are increasing every year. When it was introduced to the tuning culture, they were fitted with bigger engines such as vr6 engines with turbos and some even fitted a 1JZ engine in the rear bay and converted it to rear-wheel drive so they could drift.
The Caddy was also made into a Stance car by either fitting air suspension like Cameron Nicols's immaculate 1987 Euro Style MK1 Caddy, or they would fit coilovers in the front and do an axle flip at the rear to drop it really low. If you stay in South Africa and own a Caddy, it's best to keep it because they are getting rare, especially in immaculate condition.
Darren has certainly captured the heart of this caddy in his image and really made the colour pop from the images, the rustic background seems to highlight it, even more, make sure to check out all his images and give him a follow for even more wonderful shots on Instagram.

My name is Cameron Nicol, I am a 21-year-old videographer and editor based in Cape Town, South Africa
Cameron says he thinks the obsession with cars came naturally over time. Looking back, he did land up watching a lot of Top Gear growing up and always loved the sound of loud cars and going fast. That eventually transpired into motorcycles and then when he was old enough…. cars. Cameron drives a bagged 1987 MK1 Volkswagen Caddy with a 2l 8v conversion. He always loved the look of Euro-inspired cars and the simplicity of their builds.
Having a car that is on air suspension that you don't normally see is quite entertaining especially when you go to your local shopping centre and see everyone breaking their necks just to stare at your car. Something about breaking the norm of car culture especially here in South Africa is very satisfying, and owning this car, I have come to realize that most people, be it of any gender or age seem to appreciate the "old" clean look.
Since she is currently a 35-year-old car, she has her quirks. One of which is while driving, you hear every and any sound inside and outside of the car, as there is little soundproofing. Naturally, due to the 2l conversion, she is quite thirsty for petrol and makes quite a noticeable rumble from the 276 cam that's installed as well.
If I had to give any advice to someone looking to own this car, they need to realize and accept that it does show its age and it's not an easy "daily" car. No power steering, no air con, electric windows, cabin space or driver aids, it's a very "hands-on" car to drive.
Something I would recommend to do to the car is to rubberize the back bay to protect it from rust and potential rust/scratches when used. If you have an older motor or engine conversion, I would recommend getting an idle set installed so that when cold, it can hold idle and not die when pulling up to stop streets.
I think what makes my car unique especially if you take into consideration that I am in South Africa is that there are little to no original Caddies here and then not to mention that mine is also on air. A very common and also regular comment I get is how beautiful the blue paint is and if it is still original.

The engine conversion was done by the previous owner of the car. The air ride system was done by Q-Beams here in Cape Town. The Rubberising was done by Rhino Line in Durbanville and all tuning and maintenance were done by S&M Performance in Cape Town. I am looking to source original MK1 Headlights for the car as well as put the bigger front lip on after that restore the Lago Blue paint by having a full colour correction and detail done.
Being part of the car scene has definitely been amazing, making new friends and being around people that share the same passion as you is always a great experience.
Dream Car
One day I would love to own one of the later VW Golf Gti's or if I can find a good condition JDM S-Chassis that would be perfect.
