A Family Man's Car Journey

Hi, my name is Roger Dejesus from Compton, California. I'm a father of two boys and three beautiful girls and my wife, Jacky Dejesus. I'm 39 years old and work as a diesel technician with city transportation, having been in the industry for 19 years. On my time away from work, I enjoy being at home with my wife and kids. In my spare time, I like to work on my cars and chill in the garage – that's my "me time," haha. I enjoy going to local car meets and car shows, but man, my kids keep me busy – it's the best.

The Spark of Automotive Enthusiasm

I remember when I was a kid, my dad would work on his cars – nothing crazy, just oil changes, starter swaps, and so on. I would be next to him, asking questions about what he was doing and what each component did. He would answer as best as he could. I would then see myself working on model cars, tricking them out, lowering them, and painting them. Soon, I was building model lowriders using big Johnson motors to make them hop. My dad was always encouraging me and asking what I was going to do next.

The Early Years of Car Ownership

When I turned 11 years old, my dad taught me how to drive. At 14, he got me my first car, which was, oh my goodness, the worst – a 1984 Ford Escort Turbo. This car was good, but the parts were hard to find and discontinued. Long story short, I got rid of that car, and then came the list of cars. At 15 years old, I started working and got my first real car, a 1987 Ford Mustang 5.0. Then came a series of cars, mostly Mustangs. My dad helped me get that car up and running, including paint work and more. After that, I was hooked on modifying cars, and along the way, I made a lot of great friends whom I still talk to this very day.

The Honda Civic Build

I've had Civics in the past with a few mods here and there. I got my current Civic from a friend who had plans for it and had it really modified. He took it apart, painted it a solid color, and it sat for years until one day he called me and asked if I was interested. I told him yes, went to his house, and picked it up. At this point, the Civic was just a roller – a blank canvas, you could say.

Customizing the Interior and Exterior

I always wanted to do something different, so since I had a car with good paint, I started putting the interior together, replacing the carpet, panels, and so on. I went with different-style seats until I found a good set of Recaro seats with yellow mesh centers. I also went with different dash clusters until I got the AEM digital dash installed, along with a roll bar and ECU mounting.

The Honda Civic Engine Build

Choosing the right engine for my vision was tough. I could've gone with a K-series, but I've always liked the B-series engine better, so I chose to go that route. On top of that, I remember seeing a 1999 Honda Civic back in the day with a Vortech supercharger. At the time I was putting the car together, I remembered that Civic, and I hadn't seen another Civic supercharger like that in a long time. I decided to look for one and found a good used unit.

I started putting the engine together. At that time, it was a B20 bottom end with a GSR head. I went with simple bolt-ons: a long tube header, 3-inch exhaust, Victor X intake, 1000cc injectors, GSR transmission, and Matrix full coilovers, along with GSR front and rear brakes to get the car going. I took it to the dyno, and it made 280hp on that setup.

Not long after, I blew up the engine. I then started hitting up my good friend Henry from TwoStepMotorsports to build me a motor. He built me a GSR 1.9L engine with 81.5mm pistons, LS Eagle rods, LS crank, GSR head with Supertech valve springs and retainers, Skunk2 Pro 1 cams, and an LSD in my transmission with a twin disk clutch. At this time, the car made 400hp – it was a great build until I changed parts 3 years later and ran the car lean, ending up cracking a sleeve.

With the quickness, I put my spare motor in, which is the engine I currently have – a B18C5 USDM Type R motor. I changed the header, intake, cam gears, coil-on-plug, brake setup, and suspension setup. With the engine setup now, it's making a good 331hp, making good power for what it has. It's a water-to-air intake setup with a custom DTR header, Skunk2 Mega Power full exhaust. The car is running on a Hondata S300 V3 with individual coils – not bad, if you ask me, lol.

The Uniqueness of the Honda Civic Build

I think I have one of the most unique cars out right now. You don't see many B-series Civics with an old-school Vortech supercharger, knowing the kit has been disconnected for over a decade and still making power. I like having the mix of old-school parts with some of the new products out right now and making it functional. I'm having a catalogue of Mode Parfume parts on my car, from the front bumper, carbon side skirts, MP mirrors, wing, and Mode Parfume endless brake setup, with the combination of a carbon fiber hood and trunk. I love driving this car – it's not a show car, but I drive it, and the unique sound the supercharger makes gets attention just about anywhere. The power is on demand, and it's instant once you put your foot down. It's just an amazing car to drive and own.

The Collaboration Behind the Build

Most of the work performed on my car was done by myself. Any custom work and engine work were done by Henry from TwoStepMotorsports. Anytime I call, he is there, whether it's welding or fab work. Ruben at RFab makes some really great parts, down to suspension and fab work. Manny at HL Customs makes great parts like my oil catch can and water reservoir for the water-to-air system. When I need parts ASAP, I go to High Society on IG – he will get what you need at a great price. David at Tire Bully's always gets me the best deals on tires, and when I need his assistance with mounting tires, he's the guy to go to. When tuning my car, I hit up Kevin at KVTuned, who's always on the keys. And when I need a helping hand, I hit up my son Alex and my wife Jacky.

Future Plans for the Honda Civic

The future plans for my Civic are to go AWD with the current supercharger setup I have. I think it would be a great outcome and would love to test out the advantages of the AWD system on a Civic, not just in a straight line but also on the track – it would be a monster. Ultimately, I plan to repaint the car and redo the engine bay.
