Meet RJ and Frances: A Passion for Adventure
We’re RJ and Frances, a husband-and-wife team with a love for the outdoors, cars, and food. Whether we’re off-roading, snapping breathtaking landscape photos, or discovering new cuisines, our Bronco has become the centerpiece of our adventures.
Born in the Philippines, I (RJ) moved to the U.S. at just four years old, while Frances joined me here in 2010. Our shared passion for travel and exploring new cultures sparked a love for landscape photography, and the best landscapes often required off-road vehicles to reach. That’s how our journey with the 2021 Ford Bronco began.
Why the Ford Bronco?
When it came to choosing an off-road vehicle, we explored several options, including a 2020 Jeep Rubicon and even a pre-owned Mercedes G-Wagon. However, when the 6th Generation Ford Bronco debuted, it stole our hearts.
We quickly realized the Bronco could fuel our passions for off-roading and photography while being the perfect project vehicle. Starting with simple upgrades, our Bronco has since transformed into a fully customized off-road beast.
The Early Days of Building Our Bronco
The first thing we installed was side steps to make it easier to get in and out of the truck. However, as we tackled more challenging trails, those steps kept hitting rocks, so we swapped them out for sturdy rock sliders. That small change opened the floodgates for a full-blown build.
We added aluminum skid plates for better protection and upgraded the suspension for rougher trails. Lighting upgrades like a light bar, ditch lights, rock lights, and fog lights improved visibility during night adventures. We even incorporated carbon fiber into the build for a unique aesthetic, ensuring every part we added could handle the rigors of off-roading.
From Off-Road Trails to Car Shows
Initially, the Bronco was built purely for off-road adventures. But as we continued to modify it, people began to notice and appreciate our work. Soon, we were taking the Bronco to car shows, where it started winning awards in its category.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. At our first car meet—a Jeep meet-up—we were the only Bronco there. Some attendees loved it, while others were skeptical. That experience only motivated us to improve and showcase our build even more.

Challenges and Triumphs
We’ve done 80% of the work ourselves in our apartment garage. From installing carbon fiber fenders (which took six days!) to upgrading the exhaust system, every step has been a learning experience. We even installed a body lift in a park!
For the parts we couldn’t handle, Savant Auto Works in Los Alamitos stepped in, installing components like CV axles, upper control arms, and Radflo shocks.
Tips for Off-Road Enthusiasts
For anyone building an off-road truck, here’s our advice:
-
Invest in Durable Parts: Focus on components that are likely to break, like suspension and steering components.
-
Inspect Used Vehicles Carefully: Look for leaks in the engine bay and shock reservoirs before purchasing.
What’s Next?
While our Bronco build isn’t completely finished, we’re already dreaming of our next project vehicle. Whether it’s another truck, a Japanese sports car, or even a Euro sports car, we’re excited for what’s ahead.
We also plan to add portals and upgrade the brakes on the Bronco. Additionally, we’re working on overlaying our harness bar with carbon fiber.
Dream Cars and Shout-Outs
Our dream cars? A 1966 Ford GT and a 1993 Nissan Skyline R32.
