For over five decades Volkswagen has competed in nearly every type of motorsport there is. From rallycross to formula 3 Volkswagen has dominated in their class racking up three Dakar Rally wins, four world rally championships, two TCR international titles, and three rallycross world championships. Not to mention the prototype ID.R electric track weapon that has smashed records at the Nürburgring, Pikes Peak, and Goodwood just to name a few. Though this is all impressive, Volkwagen has officially hung up their fire suits and helmets for good. It's an end of an era for the German auto manufacture.

Although this is a shock, Volkswagen does seem to have reasoning behind their decision. The automotive powerhouse has decided to focus its top engineer's efforts on the electric market. Volkswagens own  Dr. Frank Welsch, head of the development department, stated "The Volkswagen brand is on the way to becoming the leading provider for sustainable e-mobility. To this end, we are pooling our strengths and have decided to terminate the Volkswagen brand's own motorsport activities. The motorsport workforce will be integrated into Volkswagen AG. The deep technical expertise of the motorsport employees and the know-how gained from the ID.R project will remain with the company and will help us put further efficient models from the ID. family on the road". This news mixed with the announcement of new addition Alexander Hitzinger who will be leading the development of Audi's new top-secret project Artemis, a new electric car with advanced autonomous technology to blow Tesla out of the water. Alexander Hitzinger should be the perfect fit for this position seeing as he helped develop Porsches Lemans winning 919 and gave the engineers at Apple some help when they began developing their self-driving cars. 

Although details are scarce as of now, it is looking like Volkswagen is going to become an electric powerhouse more than ready to take on the likes of Tesla. With the knowledge that the engineers involved with the incredible ID.R Racecar have gained, it should only be a matter of time before we see the Volkswagen brand take over the electric market. Who knows, maybe we may see the first electric Lamborghini Hypercar.....
