From Porsche To Supra
Howdy! I’m Matty J. I sing in a band called Friends Like Us, manage a Porsche parts department, and spend most of my time dreaming about my next project car or go-fast modification. Whether it’s autocross, road racing, or road-tripping to Tail of the Dragon with my buddies, nothing beats the escape that comes from being behind the wheel. Here’s the story of how I came to own my dream car, a 1994 JDM Toyota Supra Turbo, and where I’m planning to take it.

How It All Started
Honestly, I wasn’t always into cars. It all began when I got my first car, a Volkswagen Passat. (Go ahead, judge me!) The turbo failed within a few hundred miles after I bought it from a sketchy buy-here-pay-here lot. If I wanted to keep driving as a broke teenager with a minimum-wage job, I had no choice but to learn how to fix it myself—and fast! Lesson one? If something breaks, upgrade it. That’s how my love for turbochargers and tuning was born.
And no, my inspiration wasn’t The Fast and the Furious (cue the music: Hell-Naw To-The Naw-Naw-Naw). It was actually a low-quality YouTube series called Turbo Dreams that captivated me, watching it buffer on our 56k dial-up connection. I realized my dream car was within reach—it would just take time and money.
The Dream Car Becomes a Reality
Welcome to 2024, where car prices have skyrocketed, and they don’t seem to be coming back down anytime soon. Honestly, I sold my 2024 Porsche 911 T to buy this Supra. Was that crazy? Not at all. When you don’t have an emotional connection to a car, it feels like a loveless relationship—you have to know when to move on and follow your heart.
Let’s check the boxes: Right-hand drive? Check. Legendary 2JZ engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission? Triple check. Even if you’re not a car person, when you see a Supra, you know it’s something special. You can park it next to a car worth four times as much, and people will still flock to the Supra. The hype is real, my friends.

I bought this gem from a private seller who has years of Supra experience and owns several of them. So, I knew the car was in good hands. So far, I’ve been handling the basic maintenance myself—spark plugs, oil changes, engine belt replacements. It’s been a fun and rewarding process, and I’m stoked for what’s to come.
Living in Supra Paradise
Living in Florida has its perks. Iconic Supra experts like Titan Motorsports, Real Street Performance, and Induction Performance are all just a short drive away. With these resources in my backyard, there’s no telling how far I can take this build.
Future Plans
What’s a Supra without a big single turbo? For 2025, I’m focusing on building a stock bottom-end street machine that’s both fun and manageable. I’m aiming for around 600whp on low boost and 850whp on high boost. Coming from an 8-second A90 Supra, I’ve learned the hard way that there’s a limit to how much power you can put down on the street. Internet warriors talk about 1,000whp like it’s nothing, but most have no idea what’s actually involved.
I don’t see myself drag racing this car competitively—something about right-hand drive and shifting with my left-hand doesn’t sound fun on the track. But ripping around on the street and making those iconic STUTUTU sounds? Count me in.
Shout Outs
Shout out to Zack Hendershot (@itwitchdaily) for being an incredible photographer and for encouraging me to do this feature. Big thanks to my great friend and Supra guru Matt Erjavac (@_supramatt) for his guidance and motivation. And most of all, a huge thank you to my wife Dana, for supporting me and pushing me to chase my dreams.
Dream Car Achieved
You’re looking at it, friends. I’ve always thought I wanted an R35 GTR, a Porsche, maybe even a Lamborghini or Ferrari. But sometimes, it’s not about the stats on a piece of paper—it’s about the emotional connection. Take my advice: go drive your dream car. See if it lives up to the hype. They say, “Don’t meet your heroes,” but in the case of the Supra, it has absolutely lived up to its legendary name. I’m looking forward to many more years of enjoyment behind the wheel.
