2015 Bagged BMW M4 - Jason Strange

While “casually” car shopping on the interwebs, I found a white 2015 BMW M4 and it checked the major boxes on my list: White, manual transmission (of course), sunroof, as well as specific creature comforts in the interior.

I am Jason Strange,  from the Lone Star State. I currently reside in Frisco, Texas and work in Marketing at Hi-Line Inc. During my spare time, I usually tinker with off-the-wall DIY projects, like electrical work, app development, home automation, photography, 3D animation, and so forth.

I grew up admiring the craftsmanship of all car makes and models, ranging from hypercars to old-school hot rods, and dreamed of building one someday. My First car was a 1988 CRX SI with a few mods and while learning how to drive, a ring broke in one of the cylinders. Having your car break down before getting a driver’s license was seriously discouraging!  Rather than buying another car, my dad taught me how to rebuild the engine under his guidance and I was hooked ever since. Cars are one helluva drug!

Zofie, my wife, and I eventually had the ‘dream car’ talk, which everyone should have at one point in their life by the way! At the time, she had a slightly modded, dark grey 2017 370Z Nismo with a manual transmission. For her dream car, she really wanted an interior with more bells and whistles, a more timeless exterior, and a little more power would be nice. A serious contender was the BMW M4 coupe (F82).

While “casually” car shopping on the interwebs, I found a white 2015 BMW M4 and it checked the major boxes on my list: White, manual transmission (of course), sunroof, as well as specific creature comforts in the interior. After our Speed Racer test drive at the dealership, two things happened.  (1) I found out why I have to replace the rear tires so often and (2) she traded in the 370Z Nismo and we began our journey with the BMW. She named the car “Gloomy” after her favourite pink bear with bloody claws. Yup, you read that right; this is my wife’s car!

In the beginning, it was only basic modifications, like full bolt-ons, lowering the suspension, tint, and exhaust. Nothing special. Once the car’s warranty had ended, the engine was later modded and tuned to be 600 WHP on 93 octane by Matt at Cedar Performance in Dallas. Then the pandemic pandemonium happened. Because my wife started working from home permanently, the M4 was no longer needed as a daily driver. I absolutely loved Gloomy as-is at this point; however, the little voice in the back of my head could not be ignored. “Get in the 800 WHP club!” There was an opportunity here and with the green light, I took Gloomy full tilt to the next level with only one requirement: Keep it tasteful!

Owning this car is so surreal. The car enthusiasts flocking around Gloomy at an event and the audible sounds of amazement when Gloomy is aired out to be flush with the ground are unbelievably fun! However, Gloomy is also nerve-racking! Surely this is relatable to many car owners, but there is a lot of anxiety with subpar roads and/or less-than-optimal weather conditions.

Most custom builds excel in either aesthetics or power, but why choose a tradeoff when you can do both? Gloomy has a minimalist look and 840 WHP. This is a conservative tune and was done during a typical Texas summer at 117 degrees. Boost season is a different story and we get bonus HP!

I did the basic mods. Khamala @KustomzUnltd installed the air ride. Matt @CedarPerformanceDallas built and tuned the entire car—from the fully built motor to the meth injection and other goodies. Matt’s knowledge of cars overall and specificity with BMWs is insane. The level of detail from Khamala and Matt is impressive.

Future Plans:

If the moons and stars align, the seats may be replaced with something like the G82 CS Carbon seats. Other than that, enjoy Gloomy!

Advice/Tips:

Do what you want and make the car yours, but do it right and do it once. The likelihood of unnecessary cost/time increases dramatically when a build is partially done or when corners are cut. In the end, you get what you pay for.

Shout Outs:

I have met a few chill groups, but the ones I vibe most with are the local show and cruise group, @Dallas.Bavarians, as well as @Slightly_Modded in Las Vegas, who share my same level of admiration for cars.

The car scene has been good for me, I like seeing other builds and the different stages the projects are in.  Talking to others that have a similar passion is always fun and watching little kids freak out over your car never gets old, because we were all that kid.

Dream Car:

McLaren 720
