2016 Ford Focus - Alex Hammond

Every time I sit in the car I feel enjoyment from the Recaro bucket seats hugging me, the smell of catless exhaust, bouncing all over the road and watching my blastpipes shoot flames through my rearview mirror.

I’m Alex Hammond I am 19 years old and from the Chicago suburbs, my life revolves around cars from work to YouTube videos to car shows. I work around cars 24/7 for work I do auto and marine fabrication and upholstery full time and I work at my buddy wrap and cosmetic shop on call. Other than that u will find me in my garage working on my cars.

As long as I remembered I have always been interested in cars, weirdly enough I did not come from a “car family” and didn’t really grow up with anyone with the same love for cars as I did. I remember on long road trips with my parents when I was young I used to have my eyes peeled looking out the windows trying to find cars that interested me and taking lots of pictures on my iPod… after we got to our destination whether 30 minutes or 10 hour trips the first thing I would want to do is show them my favourite cars I saw and then ask to go right back outside and look at cars passing by on the closest busy intersection.

When I was younger I remember riding my bike a few miles away to the local classic car show every Tuesday night in the summer and enjoying every second of it. I was always into all types of cars but when I was 14 years old I was to my first stance/tuner show (tuner evolution Chicago) and fell in love. I met so many amazing people and cars that I never was able to see at classic car shows and cars and coffees that my parents would stop by with me if we were passing by. I started going on Facebook and Instagram and looking for the next car show I could go to.

Shortly after meeting a lot of new friends in this whole new world of cars at these shows, I was certain this was something I wanted to do. I remember I was volunteering at a car show helping with parking, rolling in and judging I ran into team elevate Chicago, these guys were who I looked up to and they respected me and took time to talk to me and answer all my questions even though I was just a kid. And about this time was when I got my first car…

People always ask me why I chose this car, I get the “why didn’t you buy an RS or ST” and “why didn’t you spend your money on something else” all the time.  The best part was I didn’t really choose it… when I turned 16 and got my driver's license, my sister was moving to Michigan to go to college and couldn’t take her car with her. It was the same focus you see today but a bone stock base model ford focus and a teenage girl's car. At first, I wasn’t too happy about it and I had my heart set on getting a 3rd gen Acura TL and doing a VIP build… but then I started looking into it and the insurance, fuel efficiency,  practicality and price were unbeatable.

Shortly after I started going to all the car meets around I met one of my first “car friends” Tyler, he had a focus st that would catch your eye from a mile away. It was wrapped in half marble and half galaxy print and he not only inspired me to start modifying my car but gave me so much help and answered all my questions. That’s when I knew I wanted to do something with this car

Every time I sit in the car I feel enjoyment from the Recaro bucket seats hugging me, the smell of catless exhaust, bouncing all over the road and watching my blastpipes shoot flames through my rearview mirror. I daily drive this car all year round rain or shine and even in blizzards. I just love every second in the car even with as stressful and impractical it is in this state I love it.

Every time I let someone drive my Focus they compare it to a go-cart. It’s low and wide and goes the same speed and smells like one too. My Focus isn’t fast by any means but going the speed limit in this car feels like you are moving so much faster. When my sister comes home to visit I offer to let her drive it every time and she can’t believe this was the same car she used to ride around in.

My focus is definitely unique, it has a lot of 1/1 parts and I don’t think anyone has ever done anything like this to a base model. I always have people asking questions about what’s next and half of the time I don’t even know. I go with the flow and do any crazy idea I have and somehow make it work.

My goal with this car was to make it unique I was so tired of seeing every Ford Focus with the same cookie-cutter build. I wanted to do thing nobody will expect or even think about doing. A little over a year ago someone said I was copying my buddy Jc’s car. Yes, they were both bright blue Ford Focuses on white wheels with cargo boxes but we’re still very different. After that, I decided I wanted to change not just the colour but the whole car so much that it can’t be compared to anyone else’s build.

Why Not Submit Your Car Build Here

Build List:

My engine build isn’t anything too crazy I don’t mind a slow car, it’s just bolt-ons and a tune I have a Borla st catback with custom blast pipes paired with obx mk2 focus headers. Upgraded coil packs and spark plugs, coolant tank, oil cooler, intake, intake spacer and every other bolt-on I could use without boosting it.

For my interior, I went with a few different routes but plan on going back and re-doing everything. I have Recaro focus st2 seats, a starlight headliner on black suede, along with a lot of carbon fibre pieces such as pillars, armrests, headlight controls, speaker covers, shift knob, ebrake, head unit, steering wheel and many other small pieces. I also have an onboard air system and an Xbox 360 and tv in the trunk to keep me entertained on the long mornings waiting for the shows to start after a roll-in.

My engine bay, it’s carbon fibre everything, the battery cover, intake cover, fuse box cover and the custom engine cover is all custom carbon fibre. One of my favourite engine bay drew up pieces is the unknown headlight covers (every focus owner needs them)

For the exterior one of the most eye-catching things is the battle aero 70” hatch mount wings right above massive blast pipes. The car has a fortune widebody kit paired with an rs front bumper and st rear bumper. The hood, hatch and rs spoiler are all seibon carbon fibre and my carbon fibre vlands headlights with spec D tail lights.

Also has carbon fibre mirror caps and door handles. I have vega-modified side skirts, canards and diffusers. Another one of my favourite modifications is the Silverwing cargo box but my favourite part of the whole car is the Calvary red wrap with a suicide prevention message embossed in the wrap tributing my friend Trix I lost to suicide. It reads “everything will be okay” and a lot of people don’t notice it but I know it’s there.

I am on CCW classic 3pc forged wheels with powder-coated white faces and chrome lips.

I am on KW coilovers with massive performance front strut bar and FSwerks rear strut bar, FSwerks strut bars and links and Megan racing car and control arms.

I did all of the work myself with the help of friends. I learned everything I know through trial and error on this car and always believed I could figure it out somehow. Everything I did was my first time trying and I repeated it until I got it right. Omega auto shop was able to help me by making my custom blast pipes but I was always hesitant of going to shops these guys really impressed me and I wouldn’t be opposed to going back and having them help me with other projects.

Future Plans:

Besides changing little things and wraps I would want to boost it or do an st drivetrain swap in the near future and change up the interior. I am currently working on my 1993 Nissan 300zx vert so depending on how that goes I will be back to change the focus.

Advice/Tips:

My best advice is to help others as much as possible whether it’s by answering their questions or helping them learn how to work on their own cars. The little effort it takes to help can be the biggest motivation and inspiration for them to do something of their own. And I promise it will make their day 100% better.

Shout Outs:

Big shoutouts to @team.elavate_ for being the best car club I could ever ask for. Every day these guys and girls support me and motivate me and always have a good time with me at car shows. @omega_auto_service for creating a friendship and earning my trust and respect for having the best auto shop in the Chicagoland area. @jcwrapz_ for going hand in the hand with teaching and helping each other progress in our builds and in life. @unkwncarco for bringing all of the best focuses together to help and share with each other and create products for this platform. And everyone who has supported me whether it was giving me a compliment or helping me work on my car in the late nights in the garage

The friends I have met online and in person are irreplaceable, people who I talk to every day now came from complementing each other's cars. These guys and girls have taught me so much about cars and life itself and have been by my side through everything.

Dream Car:

Mazda FC RX7 or Nissan S13 vert
