2020 Toyota Supra - Matt Jerozal

My friends would bring whatever tuner magazines they could get their hands on to school and be in utter shock and awe, gawking at whatever fibreglass body kit import with neon under glows would drape the pages. Piquing my interest, my eyes would wander over to the sight of their excitement.

Residing in Palm Bay Florida, I'm a 34-year-old father, husband, and Porsche parts manager of 14 years. Friends know me for my love of Evos, however, I'm an enthusiast that has owned and raced everything from my R33 Skyline, 718 Cayman, Nissan S-chassis, Datsun, STi, and as recent of the last 2 years, my 2020 A90 Supra.

What got me into cars, Ah yes, the beginning of the money-sucking, bloody knuckle, late night sweat-drenched wrenching (and often alcohol-induced) addiction that paved the way for a lifestyle so many of us have adopted. It was early 2006, my senior year of high school, and many of us didn't even have driver's licenses at the time. My friends would bring whatever tuner magazines they could get their hands on to school and be in utter shock and awe, gawking at whatever fibreglass body kit import with neon under glows would drape the pages. Piquing my interest, my eyes would wander over to the sight of their excitement.

NOTHING.. just, nothing. I didn't, "get it". Skating and music were life, what's so cool about cars? Boy was I in for a life-changing experience. Fast forward months later, I'm riding shotgun in my buddy's Scion xB, naturally nicknamed, "The Toaster" (because that's real original) to meet up with some skaters in Orlando for a video premiere at a fancy hotel. It was there, as I approached a side door to enter the hotel, a silver Evo VIII approached my direction rolling into just enough boost and letting off the accelerator, allowing the BOV to let out a "WHOOOSHHH" that echoed off the building so loud it would stop an Olympic sprinter in their tracks. The sound was music to my ears. I suddenly, "got it".

Why did I choose this car you ask, I followed the Toyota FT-1 Concept for literally years. It was the embodiment of what I viewed as the sports car of the future. With rumours it would bare the iconic "Supra" badge, I vowed I would work my butt off to own one, no matter what revisions took place, the bar was set and a reputation was at hand for Toyota to live up to. Years later, it happened. My patient proved true and the 2020 GR Supra was released. But wait. It's a what? No, don't tell me that. A BMW PLATFORM?! Many feelings were swirling around during the unveiling; some the disappointment, confusion, optimism, and finally acceptance. Through the BMW jokes (don't worry I tell them too) and testing on and off track, something was brewing. Suddenly, people were actually doing something with the platform. Boundaries were being broken.

Track records were being set. Everything the Supra name had lived up to. This car wasn't just doing it, it was doing it better in literally every category of performance compared to its predecessors. So, like anyone in the automotive business does when the first year of a new model launches, I waited. There had to be bugs and kinks to work out right? After all, it's a brand-new model, there's no way! Wrong. I watched as YouTuber after YouTuber, journalist after journalist tested this thing for months, and smiles per gallon and reliability were all there. 8 months after launch, I called a dealer in Sarasota with the spec I wanted, Absolute White in Premium trim, bought it sight unseen and said, "Have the paperwork ready. I want to be in and out". The rest is history.

It is hands down the easiest vehicle for making incredible gains with minimal mods and cost that I have ever owned. Period. It simply does all the right things. Want to shred around Tail of the Dragon? No problem, throw the stock wheels on with a set of Michel Pilot Sport 4S's and have at it. Want to go to the track, run mid 9's in the quarter mile and drive to work the next day as a daily commuter? Yep, does that too. While it's not for everyone, for me it checks all the boxes.

How do I describe owning this car, In a word, interesting, It looks and performs well enough to blend in with the supercars but is still affordable enough to park outside your local grocery store and not garner too much attention. Word of advice, keep your windows rolled up at traffic lights and be prepared for encounters at the gas pump because everyone and their mother wants to ask how much power it's making.

Truth be told, you'll meet some awesome people who are generally interested, but eventually, you'll run into the smirky "it's a BMW" guy looking for a negative reaction, to which I reply in agreement. This usually leads them into a jumble of umms and uhhs trying to follow up with something clever to say. It's quite entertaining actually. Comes with the territory I suppose.

The fact that it's my only car and gets driven literally every day speaks volumes. I have always been a one race car, one daily driver kind of guy. Thanks to the help and guidance of my tuner Mikey Botti, the car was going 9.9's in the quarter mile in January 2022 with only a bolt-on turbo, downpipe, and a spray of meth injection for cooling. To this day I believe there are less than a handful of people that have done it. Now with a built transmission and port injection, we are cutting 1.31 60' and a 9.5 in the quarter mile on a conservative tune. Daily driver power baby.

Titan Motorsports have been the key wrenchers on this project. Shoutout to Kyle Scott at Titan as this car would not nearly have progressed as far as it has thus far without him. Thanks, Kyle!

Future Plans

You'll see a visual transformation coming VERY soon. Let's just say, we're going to need some updated photos for the next feature, things are going to get rowdy. Beyond the aesthetics, future plans are to put the car into the 8's in the quarter mile, stock motor and full weight. With the aid of a top mount Precision 6870 turbo and Mikey Botti behind the keys, a parachute mount is the badge of honour I'm chasing.

Advice/Tips

Do it. And don't settle for the 2.0 or you'll be kicking yourself in the head wishing you would have been patient and saved your pennies. Keep it simple. A downpipe and E50 tune with a sticky tire is a rocket. If you plan on going to the track and launching the car, you have a 50/50 shot of breaking an axle (ask me and many others how I know). That's all folks!

Groups/Clubs/Shout Outs

I'm not a part of any car clubs or groups, but a massive shout out to Zack Hendershot @itwitchdaily for reaching out to me about this opportunity and going out of his way on his vacation to meet up and snap some killer shots! Also, the biggest shoutout to Jahziel @jahaziel_boosted and Mikey Botti @stimikey for help with the car from tuning to parts guidance and everything in between. Just all-around good people I'm glad to call close friends.

What have I got from the car scene, A career working with one of the most prestigious car companies in the universe, Porsche? Selling parts has been like a candy lover working in a candy store. When you buy as many performance parts and goodies, as I have over the years, being able to apply that knowledge and help others that are hitting the track, is the biggest blessing.

Dream Car

Once an Evo fanboy, always an Evo fanboy. A White 2006 Evo 9 RS with a JDM rear bumper and Evo VII will always be my dream car. Who knows, maybe someday one will fall on my lap. Until then, it's the Zupra life for me.
