Dave Lowery - 2007 Cayman - 4.2L swap

The motor retains the basic blueprint of the original VISION build, which is largely a mix of the same methodology and materials used by every other reputable M96-97 big motor builder (LN, Raby, BGB).  However, on rebuild, Memphis Motorwerks has gone a bit further to address potential weakness and common issues with higher displacement M96-97 motors.  The original build details and enhancements are as follows:

The original plan was to swap it down the road if something major failed....keyword "original". Two weeks after buying the car, my buddy sent me a link to a fully built 3.8 from a 997 S. Bored to a 4.2, deep sump, x51, pistons, rods, sleeves, etc and it was already set up for a 987.1. How could I say no?

The seller and I worked out a deal and set up shipping. The engine arrived and my friend, Tobi Connell, did the swap for me. A 4.2 from a base 2.7 is a NICE upgrade. :)

  • 997S 3.8 Donor Motor, fully disassembled, inspected, cleaned, measured.
  • LN IMS retrofit; gear welded to the shaft
  • New water pump; main and rod bearings
  • Original crank knife-edge and machined
  • Carrillo rods and bolts
  • Oil pump housing ported and polished
  • New oil cooler
  • 103 MM JE Pistons
  • LN sleeves
  • Motorsports AOS

This was VISION's most extensive "full track" package. The cost for that build was $31,000, WITHOUT intake, sump, or exhaust components, and of course without install or shipping.  On rebuild, Memphis Motorwerks has done the following:

  • Full disassembly, inspection, cleaning, extensive measuring, etc.
  • New OE 3.8 crank (NO cutting or machining)
  • New OE harmonic balancer*
  • New OE oil pump and cooler (precaution to ensure no debris from failure)
  • Full set of new JE pistons (precautionary ~ $5,500)
  • One Carillo rod replaced
  • New timing chain, cam chain, and chain guides (precautionary)
  • New IMS using LN's methodology of removing inner grease seal (https://imsretrofit.com/my06-08/)
  • #3 cylinder re-sleeved with LN sleeve
  • New intake valves and all valve seats refinished using CNC machining
  • Full X51 intake + GT3 throttle body (~ $6,000)
  • Custom aluminum Bodymotion 3 quart deep sump + pan ($4,000)

For suspension, it's on H&R coilovers and rolling on 19" wheels.

  • 19x8.5 Varro VD38X Gloss Black (Spin Forged) 5x130+
  • 19x9.5 Varro VD38X Gloss Black (Spin Forged)5x130+
  • 235/35/19 Pirelli P Zero
  • 285/30/19 Pirelli P Zero
