Donnie Roc  2011 Scion XB RS 8.0 #822

The number one question I used to get when I took the XB out to shows was “Why the hell did you build this turd on wheels?” My answer every time was “No one else wanted to do it”. I wanted to take the ugliest car that everyone made fun of and flip it into a show winning beast. I would have to say I was very successful with that.

“Never make fun of someone’s passion; it could be the only thing that saves them from this world.”

I guess this is the part where I talk about myself a little bit. Not much to know. I have 3 beautiful kids. A beautiful woman. I work 2 jobs. I am old enough to party. I served in the United States Air Force for 10 years. I deal with PTSD daily (my car and photography are how I cope with it). I take pics for Stance Auto as well as PASMAG. I also tour the USA with 742 Marketing as their official media for their RaceWars tour and their Just Vibes tour.

My interest in cars stemmed from years of watching car movies with my Dad and Grandpa as a kid. I grew up playing with Hot Wheels and Micro Machines. Eventually got into video games once NFS Underground came out and then onto the Forza Horizon series. Customization and imagination was the name of the game. I always loved being creative growing up.

The first car was a 92 Jeep Laredo, then a 96 Nissan Sentra, then an 82 VW Rabbit convertible (was gonna be a restore job but Hawaii was not kind to older cars), a 04 Ford Focus Wagon, then finally the 11 XB which I ended up building for SEMA 2014 (until it was totalled by a semi-truck). I had a 94 Acura Integra GSR for a while (got rid of that death trap asap). The XB became my coping tool once I got out of the military due to PTSD. I dove into the build to keep my focus on something positive. Once the XB was totalled though I switched my focus on my photography. I always strive for greatness in whatever I set my mind to. Whether it be a car or photography I strive to do the best I can. Right now I am in between cars until I feel like I want to build something again. The focus for me right now is my photography and expanding in the automotive industry.

I loved driving this car. It was a show car, yes but it was also my daily. Why build a car if you're not going to enjoy it? The XB was a neck breaker day or night. Road trips down to Los Angeles or up to Washington I would get people wanting to take pics of it. Tons of questions followed every time. I took pride in the car. A vision that came to life. Something ugly off the lot turned into a show winner.

Some words of advice I feel like others need to hear. Most know this but some of the noobs don't know yet. Don’t ever cheap out on parts or modifications. It’s gonna save a lot of money and frustration. Build the car for you. Don’t get butt hurt when others talk s**t about your car; it's gonna happen. Take it with a grain of salt and move on. Always do your research on parts and mods before jumping into a group forum asking questions you can easily find online.

The number one thing that made this car unique was the suicide door conversion. It was the only 2gen xB with a suicide door conversion. Everyone always asked about it. How was it done? How long did it take? Is there a kit I can buy to do it? This was a one-off deal. The beauty of the way this was done is it was made to look as stock as possible when it was finished.

The amount of work and ours into this build was def extensive. The door conversion alone was 6 months. I have Red Star Auto in Sacramento, CA to thank for that. Steve and Jimmy spent hours perfecting them. Adrian at SacTown Pros and his team helped me big time with the audio and video. I would go in after work and help when I could. Mike at Everything Air was responsible for the one off-air setup. So many sponsors and ppl to thank over the years. Networking is key in the car game.

I have been a part of a few different car clubs/groups over the years. The first car club I was really a part of was SacTown Scions. From there it was Team Love Hate and then starting another car club called FFC (Family Friends Cars). At the end of the day though it doesn't matter what group you're a part of. Car family doesn't have a name. Family is who has your back when it comes down to it. I have grown to know builders, marketing directors, show owners, etc... from all over the world. It has been a great experience and I continue to make new friends and learn new things daily not just about the cars around me but the owners and their stories.

My dream car…. Maybe one that runs and isn’t a s**t box.
