A Love Affair with Subarus: Mike Klausen's Story

I'm Mike Klausen, in my early-to-mid thirties, working in the Aerospace Engineering industry. I've owned my 2015 Subaru WRX for 10 years now and have been part of the Subaru scene for 15. Like many car enthusiasts, I grew up reading magazines like Super Street, Import Tuner, and DSPORT. The classic video games like Need for Speed: Underground 2, Test Drive, and Gran Turismo fueled my dreams, and those dreams became reality with my WRX.

2015 Subaru WRX: The Beginning of a Dream

I bought this car fresh out of college when I got my first job. For me, this WRX was a dream realized after years of driving my '97 Outback, dreaming of rallying in a WRX. While my WRX isn't built for rallying, I lowered it to keep it safe from the temptation of off-roading like my previous Subarus.

As time passed, my tastes and mods evolved. This car represents not only my automotive journey but also my growth as an enthusiast.

Why the WRX? What Makes It Special?

If I had to highlight what makes my WRX unique, it's the combination of the body kit, paint, and motor that sets it apart. Here's a deep dive into what makes my car truly one of a kind:

1. The Rare CORAZON Body Kit

My WRX features a complete CORAZON Japan Catalog body kit, the only one of its kind outside of Japan. It’s aggressive yet clean, giving the car a distinctive look that’s both stylish and functional.

2. The Custom Paint

The original WRX blue was iconic, but I wanted to take it a step further. The result? A fully custom, 4-stage color that maintains the rally blue base but enhances it with a candy blue overlay, blue-tinted clear coat, and silver and blue metallic flake. Two clear coats were added—one for depth and another for hardness. The paint shifts with lighting, giving it a blueberry hue under fluorescent lights and a wet, gleaming look in the sun.

3. The Fully Built FA20 Motor

The heart of the build is the motor: a fully built, closed-deck FA20 with custom heads, reverse intake manifold, and dual EWG headers paired with a Forced Performance turbo. The power delivery is smooth, but from 4,000 to 7,000 RPM, the car truly comes alive. It’s loud, it's fun, and it's a perfect reflection of my personality—wild when you want it, calm when you need it.

Who Did the Work?

This WRX has been a collaborative effort between myself, A/R Customs and Collision for the body and paint, and Dialed In Performance for the motor work. Together, we've brought my vision to life.

Future Plans

In the short term, I plan to upgrade to STI 6/2 pot brakes in 2025 and continue hunting for rare, high-quality JDM parts. My goal is to focus on quality-based shows and events next year, bringing even more attention to this build.
