Matt Rogers Mercedes GLC 63 AMG

There is masses of torque which makes pulling out of corners a lot of fun and the exhaust note is epic thanks to a back box mod and that AMG V8.

My name is Matt Rogers and I’m 39 years old. I’m originally from Dorset but was fortunate enough to spend most of my youth living abroad in Cyprus, Canada and the Middle East. I now live in Manchester and work as a Project Manager for a large online retailer. When I’m not working or spending time with my two daughters, I like to explore new parts of the UK and attend rallies and car shows. I also run a car club called @KustomCarClub specifically for modified German cars so that keeps me busy.

What or who got you into cars?
I remember going to the newsagents as a kid and picking up a copy of max power. I would trawl the pages for hours, amazed by the cars (mostly Ford escorts and Peugeot 106’s back then!) and the amount of effort that had gone into modifying them to make each car so unique and individual. I’ve always been quite creative so I think something really appealed to me about the aesthetics of a beautiful looking car. Once I passed my test, that was it - most of my wages went on cars and car parts. I pushed myself hard at work and spent 15 years at the company I worked for part-time whilst I was at University. Each time I got promoted, I rewarded myself with a better car! So cars have definitely always been a source of motivation for me :-)

Why this car?
After owning BMWs for 10 years, including a long line of M3’s, I really needed something more practical. A BMW F15 X5 fitted the bill for a while but I really missed the acceleration, sound and excitement of a performance car, so I started hunting for something that would do it all. The Mercedes GLC 63 AMG does everything I need it to. I can cart around the kids and dog during the week, fill it up with furniture from IKEA, take it for a weekend break in the Lake District (even in the snow) and then when I’m on my own, chew up the B-roads before rocking up at a car show! This is my first ever Mercedes AMG and I love every minute of driving it, especially the sound of that 4 Litre bi-turbo V8.
Why did you customise this car?
I never keep anything standard. I love the way a lower ride height and beautiful set of wheels can really transform the look of a car. I also think the modified vehicle is a form of expression, nowhere is that more evident than when you attend car shows and see how diverse car culture is. I’ve always enjoyed expressing myself in different ways - from the clothes I wear, the tattoos I have to the car I drive, I see it all as a creative outlet.

What does it feel like owning and driving this car?
Fast! Haha. It’s a real pleasure to drive, especially since I had the stage 1 map. Being on factory air suspension, the ride quality is excellent and I can alter the height of the vehicle within a few seconds using a lowering module that plugs into the ODB port. So I run it higher in the winter and slam it in the summer! There are masses of torque which makes pulling out of corners a lot of fun and the exhaust note is epic thanks to a back box mod and that AMG V8.
In terms of ownership, my favourite thing would be the way it looks. The lower stance, wider track and custom forged wheels make the car look so aggressive. I’ve also blacked out a lot of the trims, grills, arch mouldings and badges. I never judge a book by its cover so I get a bit of a buzz when people look at the car, look at me covered head to toe in tattoos, and they would never imagine I have a Medical Science degree and work in a highly professional environment Monday to Friday haha.
What do you think makes it unique?
I actually don’t see many modified GLC’s around, to the point that a lot of people aren’t sure what it is at car shows and walk around the back to check the model number. I think the arch trims and rear diffuser being flattened, smoothed and colour coded to the body make a big difference, as the standard grey textured plastic can look quite cheap. That and the custom wheels with very aggressive offsets make this GLC look very different to most in my opinion.

Advice/Tips?
Just do more of what makes you happy! For most people reading this article that may be cars or bikes, so get out there and enjoy them. Also don’t worry about fitting in or pleasing others - just do you. Remember “it takes nothing to join the crowd. It takes everything to stand out” - Hans F. Hansen
