A Passion Born in the San Gabriel Valley

My name is Rick Ishitani, and if there’s one thing everyone knows about me, it’s this: I’m a car addict. Not just a casual enthusiast, but someone whose life revolves around all things automotive. My love for cars spans decades, encompassing everything from American muscle to exotics, classics, and iconic JDM vehicles. Growing up in the vibrant car scene of the San Gabriel Valley during the 70s, 80s, and 90s (yes, I’m embracing the fact that I’m old!), it was impossible not to be swept up in the automotive culture.

Over the years, I’ve owned more than 59 cars since I was 16. Sometimes I wonder how rich I might have been if I’d saved my money instead of pouring it into my automotive passion. But honestly? No regrets. Cars are my love, my life, my passion.

The Roots of an Enthusiast

As a kid, my dream gifts for Christmas and birthdays were always the same: Hot Wheels. I had hundreds of them and would spend hours playing with my collection. Every year, I looked forward to the Los Angeles Auto Show at the Convention Center. It was a magical experience, seeing the latest models and innovations up close. And guess what? To this day, I’m still that kid at heart, collecting Hot Wheels and attending the LA Auto Show like clockwork.

The Special Bond with the 1971 Datsun 240Z

Among all the cars I’ve owned, the 1971 Datsun 240Z holds a special place in my heart. When I was 15, I worked tirelessly at a local market, saving every penny to buy my first car. After months of hard work, I managed to scrape together $1,000 and bought a 1971 Datsun 240Z from an elderly gentleman in Pasadena. That car was my first love, and throughout my life, I’ve owned four Datsun 240Zs.

The dream of creating a Datsun 240Z with today’s technology stayed with me. I reached out to Jhenessey at JBZ Classics and shared my vision for my “Final Z.” He eagerly took on the challenge, and together, we embarked on a journey to create a fully restored masterpiece with modern upgrades. The build took over a year, and every single nut and bolt was replaced, ensuring the car felt brand new.

What Makes the “Final Z” Unique

My “Final Z” is a tribute to my automotive journey, designed to mirror the color scheme of my 1971 Nissan Skyline Hakosuka. While I adore the car, driving an old classic isn’t without its quirks. Every bump or dip in the road makes me worry that something might fall off, and yes, your clothes will smell like gas after a drive. But these are small prices to pay for the joy it brings.

The Builders Behind the Dream

The “Final Z” wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible team of skilled car enthusiasts who poured their expertise and passion into this build. The project was led by Jhenessey at JBZ Classics (@JBZClassics), while the body and paint were expertly handled by 5 Stars Automotive in Bellflower. The Speed Forme body kit came from Masaya at @SpeedFormeUSA, and the RB engine build was overseen by Steve, the RB specialist at @Dynasty_motorwerkz. Essential OEM parts were sourced from Jay at @JDMcarparts and Jeff at @Datsungarage.

Future Plans for the “Final Z”

I’m looking forward to showcasing my “Final Z” at car shows, where it will sit proudly alongside its twin, the Nissan Skyline Hakosuka. These two cars represent not just my love for automobiles, but a lifelong journey filled with passion, dedication, and an unwavering connection to the car community.
