Hyundai i30N
Scott Jefferies
I have been in the car scene for 10 years now attending car shows across the UK with a few lightly modified cars. In 2015 I decided to try a track day in my Subaru STi and was hooked.I use the car for pleasure and work, including lots of long distance motorway miles so I need a car that does everything without being too expensive to run.
I also like gadgets and modern tech as well as having something a bit different to the Subaru had to go for something new.
That is where the Hyundai i30N came in–I read a review of the car back in November 2017 and was surprised and impressed with how a fairly ordinary hatchback had been transformed into a proper drivers car with help from the ex-BMW M-sport boss now working for Hyundai / Kia.As it was from South Korea, it also had all the latest tech and plenty of gadgets to go with its thoroughtrack development.
The adjustable drive modes and custom settings for the suspension, exhaust, steering feel, e-LSD, rev matching mean you can have a regular comfy, practical hatchback one day, anda loud, rock hard track car the next.
The boy racer pops and bangs from the exhaust add an extra grinfactor when you’re pushing hard through the gears.I test drove and ordered the car the same day, taking delivery of polar white performance spec modelon the UK launch day in January 2018.
I resisted the urge to modify the car too much at first and in two years covered 30,000 miles and threw it around at 10 track days.I’ve been to Brands Hatch (Indy and GP circuits), Snetterton, Castle Combe,Cadwell Park, Anglesey & Silverstone–the N has been amazing at all of them, the only mod being a set of lightweight OZ racing Ultraleggera alloys with semi slick NS2-R tyres.
These save 4 KG per corner over the stock 19’s which are used for the colder months on the road with a set of PS4S tyres fitted. The car hasn’t missed a beat once and takes everything you throw at it. In May this year I decided to push the car for some more performance adding a host of engine and exhaust mods before mapping the car to get over 300 hp and an extra 100 NM torque from the little twin scroll turbo 4 pot engine.
Mods include a Scorpion cat back exhaust system, Forge Motorsport intercooler, oil cooler, cold air induction kit and larger turbo inlet adapter together with a RAM air intake. The brakes were superb and stood up to a 20-30 minute track session before fade set in but to go with the extra power, fitted some Ferodo Racing pads, drilled discs, high temp brake fluid and some braided brake lines for better pedal feel.
Cosmetic mods are limited to a glass black roof wrap, blacked out badges, front splitter and side skirts /rear spats, a few track day stickers, plus the front end was covered with paint protection film when the car was new.
As a result, the paintwork and headlights are as new with no stone chips to give away the car's mileage. To get more power things start to get expensive with a bigger turbo, de-cat, fuel pump etc needed so I Will continue to enjoy track days with the mods I have done this year
I will wait and see what the Ndivision brings out over the next few years–I hear a mid-engined Porsche Cayman rival is on the cards so that could well be my next car!
