The Backstory & Mazda Legacy
The Mazda RX-7 stands as one of the most iconic sports cars in automotive history — a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive JDM legend powered by Mazda’s unique rotary engine. Celebrated for its balance, agility, and high-revving character, the FD generation (produced 1992–2002) is particularly revered for its sleek design, responsive handling, and racing pedigree, making it a dream platform for both track and street builds.
For Simon Korb, originally from Manchester and now a long-time resident of Bristol, the RX-7 represented more than performance; it was an opportunity to channel decades of automotive passion. “I’ve spent my life surrounded by cars, engines, and the UK car scene,” Simon explains. “When I finally found my FD in 2015, it wasn’t just a car — it was a blank canvas to create something personal and extraordinary.”
Why the Mazda RX-7 FD?
The FD’s lightweight chassis, legendary rotary engine, and timeless curves made it the perfect foundation for Simon’s vision. The car he purchased already featured a C-West body kit and carbon spoiler, but Simon saw the potential to elevate it far beyond its initial form.
“I wanted something that turned heads for all the right reasons,” Simon says. “It needed to reflect my style, my dedication, and my understanding of what makes an RX-7 truly special.”
Engine & Performance Upgrades
In 2017, Simon committed fully — investing over £30,000 to transform his FD into a rotary masterpiece.
The heart of the build was a full engine rebuild by Era De Klerk of Old Ones Racing, including a small street port setup designed for reliability and power. Every internal component was polished to perfection, with HKS performance upgrades including:
-
HKS intercooler
-
HKS mushroom filters (twins retained)
-
HKS spark plugs
The setup was complemented by a FEED carbon plenum cover, FEED strut brace, and Miracle Bar rear brace, giving the chassis rigidity for precise handling. Retaining the twin-turbo system maintained the car’s original character while improving performance response.
Bodywork & Exterior Details
Simon wanted the RX-7 to stand out without screaming for attention. The car received a one-off respray in black with gold and bronze tints, creating a shimmering effect depending on the light.
The carbon bonnet preserves the exposed slats, adding subtle aggression. The rear window wiper and quarter panel reflectors were shaved and smoothed for a cleaner profile, complemented by:
-
Carbon front canards
-
Carbon rear splitter
-
R Magic front main lights carbon
-
CarShop Glow front and rear lights
The FD’s stance is aggressive yet refined — an unmistakable nod to JDM aesthetics while embracing UK car culture and JDM culture.
Wheels, Brakes & Suspension
Simon upgraded to BC Forged three-piece wheels for style and performance, paired with D2 6-pot front and 4-pot rear brakes for ultimate stopping power. Adjustable suspension ensures the FD handles perfectly on the street and track, striking a balance between aggressive stance and daily drivability.
Interior & Sound
Inside, the FD blends comfort and racing inspiration:
-
Spirit R RX-7 carbon seats
-
Full carbon dash from Carbon Miata
-
JL Audio sound system with dual 10” subs, 6.5” door/rear speakers, DSP, mono-block and 4-channel amps
“It’s a driver’s car,” Simon says. “Every detail was chosen for function and aesthetics.”
The Build Philosophy
Simon’s RX-7 is a testament to patience, precision, and personal vision. Every upgrade was intentional — a reflection of his knowledge and dedication to the rotary platform.
“I didn’t rush it,” Simon notes. “It’s about creating something that represents me — my style, my skill, and my respect for the JDM legacy.”
Shoutouts & Gratitude
Simon thanks:
-
Dewi Patterson Jones (DPJ Photography) for capturing the car perfectly
-
Motorweld Ltd Bristol for fabrication support
“Building cars is never done,” Simon adds. “There’s always something to tweak, refine, or enhance.”
Future Plans
With this RX-7 now perfected, Simon dreams of his next project. “When the funds allow, I’d love to build another car — something classic, with my own twist,” he shares.
Conclusion
Simon Korb’s Mazda RX-7 FD isn’t just a build — it’s a rotary masterpiece. From the engine bay to the carbon accents, every inch reflects dedication, skill, and a deep love for JDM tuning culture . For Simon, the FD is more than a car — it’s proof that craftsmanship and passion will always shine brightest.
