Embracing Dreams at 40: My Journey Through Three SEMA Shows

Still the same old humble car guy, somehow blessed with these dreams. I have recently turned the big four-oh (40) and attended The SEMA Show three times since the last visit. This is the third and final rendition of the car, minus a couple of small tweaks here and there. I am still living in Corsicana, Texas, and have been working at Casita Travel Trailers for 14 years now, serving as the Head of Research and Development, all the while getting to play with cars.

Early Passions: From Erector Sets to Model Cars

The hobby started with being able to build things as a kid, from erector sets to Lego instructions to model cars. When I was younger, a friend moving out of town gave me a 1991 Honda CRX HF. He had no way to transport it with him or a place to keep it, only asking that if I ever sold it, I should call him first and see if he wanted it back.

Turning Point: Learning to Fix My Own Car

Shortly after, the head gasket went out, and the car started overheating. Low on funds and with no idea what to do next, a veteran neighbor of mine, a retired mechanic with all the tools you could imagine, offered to help. He said, "Son, you buy the parts, I'll help you get it fixed." I gathered all I needed, had the car pulled to his house, and when I got there, he handed me a pencil and a piece of paper.

He said, "Start taking stuff off and write it down step by step. If you don't know what it's called, put a piece of tape and mark it A, B, C, etc." Once I had everything removed, he helped me pull the head and set new gaskets. He said, "Now go back up from the bottom of your list to the top." Of course, I had a million questions in between, but long story short, I was more proud that my car still worked better than I had. I fixed it myself. At that time, I was hooked on Hondas. Here I am many years later; I can pull the whole thing apart in just a few hours.

Love for Integras: Battling the Yellow Curse

I have always loved Integras; I have owned a few. I had a vision that I was looking for, and something always happened to them. I called it the yellow curse; all my previous Integras have been yellow or painted yellow. Each one has its own story. The first mishap was young and reckless, shooting it off the highway at 95+ mph.

The second round with a yellow car, a lady ran a stop with no insurance just after I had installed my JDM front. I purchased the green one back in 2015 for 1,900 bucks cash, and man, did she need some work. This car changed the yellow car curse and turned my whole life around completely.

Evolving Vision: Transformations and Triumphs

The first couple of renditions were me trying my best to compete in a game there was no way I could afford. Single color paint here to start, wheels, engine swap, then moving on to the RHD conversion the next year. After doing the RHD, I couldn't stand it being USDM front still, so I bought the JDM front and proceeded with the conversion the following year, doing air ride and the second round of paint, aka the first graphics from the 2021 magazines

Then to find a place where I fit in and was able to represent something worth representing, all while proceeding to evolve the car again, this is where I met 742 Marketing. So much has happened since then. I could talk for days, but to sum it all up shortly, it has been a blessing beyond blessings.

Three SEMA trips, multiple magazines, 2 Summit Racing displays, and several Best of Shows. I have had all the motivation to push beyond my limits. Thank you, 742 Marketing. Now here we are, after multiple sponsorships later, still playing with cars, with amazing products and parts to stand behind; all while getting to display my vision at the same time.

Diverse Car Ownership: From Trucks to Integras to a Chevrolet Silverado

I have owned several cars prior to this Integra. My first vehicle was a truck given to me by my grandpa; it was a 1976 Ford F-150, red with a huge camper shell on top. Then I had a couple of CRXs, a Honda Prelude, and multiple Integras, and now also an OBS Chevrolet Silverado.

Unforgettable Feeling: Reflecting on Achievements and Dreams

This feeling I have is completely unspeakable after all we have been through. Multiple renditions of the car, multiple trips to The SEMA Show, seeing the car on TV, and personally every single version. It all feels like it's been a crazy dream. If I could give back half of what I achieved in the 4 years, I would feel amazing; every car guy or girl should get the opportunity to experience all I have done.

Advice for Aspiring Enthusiasts: Stick to Your Goals

Stick with your goals; nothing happens overnight, and nothing is cheap. It takes hard work, dedication, and focus, and yes, it takes time. If we were all rich, we could just flick our fingers, and bam, we would have a built car. But it doesn't work that way. You can do whatever it is you want with time, even if you are dirt poor, one piece at a time. In the end, it will all be worth it, trust me.

What sets my car apart from the rest? Every intricate detail from the roof to the tires, coupled with the jaw-dropping RP Designs paint job, contributes to its uniqueness

The Work

All work has been. Done by myself and a few good friends. Russel Penny #painter and Paul Owens #fabricator

Future Plans

Future plans work on the next project, maybe a Civic, finish my obs Chevy and do my best to help a few others get to experience what I have.

Shout Outs

I gotta give a shout-out to these people!

The Car Scene

The scene has completely changed my life. It took me from a place and time which was completely out of control and gave me something to do, something to aim my attention towards to represent and to compete; then it evolved into experiences that only some will ever get to see. To be where I am today has been one heck of a humbling experience time and time again I can only hope to be the guy to give this away to someone else truly trying to achieve it.

My dream car will always be an Acura NSX.
