Alex - 2006 Ford Mustang GT

My first car was a Mazda 5, a minivan. While it certainly was not the fastest, it still managed to get me my first speeding ticket. I was driving 80mph in a 45mph zone.

I am 21 years old and I am a mechanical engineering student at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. I currently drive a 2006 Mustang GT, which I rebuilt in my “garage” if you can even call it that.

I was always a fan of racing games from a very young age, but my favourite game was Midnight Club: LA Remix for the PSP. If you were to look it up, the first thing that you would see on the cover art is, you guessed it, a 2008 mustang, but not any s197 mustang, a 2008 SALEEN MUSTANG S302 EXTREME. So, I guess you can say that game had some influence on the car that I drive today, even though it is not a Saleen, I still drive it like one.

My first car was a Mazda 5, a minivan. While it certainly was not the fastest, it still managed to get me my first speeding ticket. I was driving 80mph in a 45mph zone. Luckily, the police officer was feeling nice that day and saw that it was my first traffic violation, so the ticket only showed that I was doing 2 mph over the limit. To this day my parents do not know how fast I was actually going. Sadly, the minivan was later repo-ed and I was careless.

My second car, after many months of saving, was a 2005 Mustang V6 with a manual transmission. This car was what started it all for me. It was in this car in which I learned how to drive stick, after a lot of embarrassing moments at stop signs and red lights of course. Surprisingly, I did not receive any tickets with this car. I did not end up modifying this car, because about a year into ownership I was itching for more power.

I actually wanted to buy a motorcycle, but my parents basically had forbidden me from buying one. I was surprised that my dad was not on board with that idea, especially since he rode motorcycles for most of his pre-dad life. I later realized he knew first-hand how dangerous motorcycles could be, especially in a city of idiot drivers like Houston. So, I settled for another car, but I only had enough money for a motorcycle.

For that reason, I bought a crashed car. The engineer in me was excited. The car I chose to buy was a 2006 Mustang GT that was involved in a front-end collision. The frame was undamaged, and the car was still run and drive. It only took me 2 months over the summer to get the car road legal once again. Honestly, the least enjoyable part wasn’t going to junkyards or sanding for what felt like days, it was filing all that paperwork. More details on the rebuild process can be found on my Instagram.

As it stands, I estimate my car has around 320 HP.

All work, except the tune, has been done by me. My car is far from being finished. Future plans include a built motor, air suspension, a wide body kit, and boost, but at the moment I don’t even have the interior carpet.

I am not a part of an official car group, rather I am part of a group of friends who love cars as much as I do. From time to time we all go on cruises around the city and take pictures of our cars. I also pop up at car meets sometimes. The car scene in Houston is huge and there is always something going on. I have only been in the car scene for six months and I have met some amazing people.
