Introduction: Meet Leo Garcia
My name is Leo Garcia, and I’m 37 years old. I was born and raised in East Los Angeles, California, where I lived for 32 years, but I now reside in Ontario, California. In my free time, I cherish moments with my family and love watching my oldest son play baseball. I’ve been passionate about Hondas for over 20 years, and I’m excited to share the story of my Spoon Civic Si hatchback build.
The Beginning of My Automotive Passion
My passion for cars ignited in the 2000s when I noticed some of my friends driving Civic hatchbacks. During that time, everyone was racing various types of cars, but Civics really caught my eye. I just knew I had to have one. The day came when my friend Pedro sold me my first hatchback; it was red, with no engine or back seats. It wasn’t the perfect body, but we got it running eventually. My friend Alonso, our local backyard mechanic, helped me install a single-cam engine, and that’s how it all started. The rest is history.
Choosing My Dream Car: The Civic Si
I chose this car because it’s my favorite chassis and was my first car—my mom bought it for me when I was 16. I purchased this particular Civic back in 2016 as a shell and dropped in a B18B motor, enjoying it for a couple of months before selling it to a friend. Four years later, in 2020, that same friend told me he was going to sell the car and asked if I wanted to buy it back. I didn’t think twice, especially since it still had most of the parts I had sold it with.
Once I got it back, I began to take it all apart. I sent the car to get painted and bought every new OEM part I could find. I also ordered Spoon parts that took forever to arrive. Thankfully, I managed to find a Type R swap for a good price. Five years later, this is how it’s sitting now—still not done, but I love how it’s come along!
The Unique Experience of Driving a ‘90s Honda
Owning and driving this ‘90s Honda is unique in its own way. Sticking to the B-series engine is simple but clean. Adding parts down to the smallest details to my liking is what makes it different. Every modification reflects my personal style and dedication to this build.

The Hands-On Experience: Building My Civic
I worked on my car myself for countless hours, gathering all sorts of new and used parts. I didn’t rush the process; I mainly enjoyed the time and effort I put into this build. Each moment spent working on my Civic was rewarding and fulfilling.
Future Plans for My Civic Si
My plans for this car include adding a few more Spoon parts, and one day, I hope to get certified by Spoon. The journey of building this car is ongoing, and I’m excited to see where it takes me.
Shout Outs: Thanking Those Who Helped
I want to give a shout-out to @artofattack for always giving me the best deals on parts, @falkentires and @fa.cinco for letting me be part of the Falken Tires team, @frankiebuilt for painting my car, @jdmofcalifornia for selling me his personal set of Recaro seats, and @mr2mivin for the awesome pictures.
Dream Car Aspirations: The NSX
This Civic is one of my favorites, and I truly enjoy it, but I would love to own a white 1992 Honda NSX one day. The NSX has always been an icon in the automotive world, and it represents everything I love about JDM cars.
