Unleashing Power and Style: 2021 Charger Hellcat Redeye Widebody

My name is Brad. I’m a Christian, husband, cat dad and cosplayer. I own a Dental Lab. We make removable prosthetics for the mouth, more commonly known as dentures and partials. I have always enjoyed playing sports (not watching).

My wife and I cosplay. We are known locally as Superman and Wonder Woman. We’ve done a number of events, everything from parties to hospital visits and Comic-Cons. One of the main things we do every year is the Metropolis Superman Celebration in Metropolis, Illinois. This year one of the cons we are going to is DragonCon which is the biggest con on the East Coast in Atlanta, GA. One of the biggest passions I have is vehicles. Thankfully that is one my wife shares and puts up with.

I go by RockyF150 on all the major social media outlets. I know that sounds off being this is a Dodge. Let me explain. From as far back as I can remember I’ve always been a Ford man. However, I can appreciate all builds. When I was about 7-8, my dad had a 78 Ford F250xlt lariat 4x4. He bought it off the showroom floor. It was two-tone cream and light blue with a blue interior.

He would sit me on his lap and let me steer while he operated the accelerator and brake. From that moment on I was locked as a Ford man. I wanted that truck so bad but I was young and he figured it was a phase. He sold it a few years later. Dad and I would always drive around looking at cars and going to car shows. I wanted a truck. He wanted me to have a Mustang. I was 14 and he took me into a dealership and there was a brand new showroom 97 cobra.

He told me we could get it and it would become my first car. I was always money-conscious and really wasn’t interested in a car. So we left. It was a month before I turned 15 and Dad, Mom and I were going out to eat, little did I know they had found a truck in an ad and the dealership was nearby.

As we drove by Dad said “Hey, look at that! Want to stop and see it?” It was a 1995 Ford F150xlt 4x4 reg cab short bed. It was a no-brainer. “Yes, I want to see it.” We pulled in, checked it out, took it for a test drive and I was in love. Struck a deal and we drove it home. Once I got my permit it was mine. To keep this long story as short as possible that truck has gone thruogh many changes but 28 years later I still own it and continue to modify it.

Why I chose this Car and Customised it

That story was just to tell you this. 3 years ago I was in the market for a 4-door family sedan. I looked at all the options and none stood out like the Charger. Never owning one before my wife and I figured it’d be best to buy a cheap one and see how we like it. I found a 2015 Dodge Charger SXT black on black rwd. Daily drove it for 2 years and had zero complaints. At that time I bought my wife a 2018 Jaguar XE-S awd, V6 supercharged with 380 hp.

She loves it still today. And she would always joke about how much cooler and faster her car was. I had 300hp. The day came she told me I should upgrade. So I began the search and that brings us to this 2021 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody. It is now my daily driver. Within 2 weeks of ownership, we went on a 14-hour round trip and for a little over 800hp it got 22mpg. As well as being fully loaded with our luggage. Can’t beat that!

What it feels like to own this car

This vehicle is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I used to own a 1998 Corvette triple black convertible with a 434 stroker, 520 rwhp / 516 rwtq and a stage 3 clutch 6 speed. And in that at all times you felt like it was an absolute animal. However, this Redeye just feels like a normal car. What it is though, is a friend that’s a serial killer. It will just hang out and have a good time but the moment you step on its toes it will throw you over the bridge with a block tied to your feet. At any moment you have to realize that you can easily break the rear loose.

If you enjoyed this car story why not read this ONE HERE

The blower with the JLT intake whines so good and the Kooks cat-back is as quiet as you can buy from the aftermarket. Even at that, it has an incredible rumble. Put it in track mode and the transmission shifts quicker than I’ve ever felt and downshifts are brutal. It accelerates so fast that you’re flying through triple digits before you even expect to hit 80. The factory line lock is a nice touch as well. My favourite thing to do is to get it up to about 40 and just push it down, the back end breaks loose and throws you into the back seats.

All that in a car you can drive every day and take on trips with your friends and loaded with luggage. Everywhere I go I either get stares, thumbs up or the obligatory “peel out” yells. As Mike Finnegan of FSM once said on Roadkill “If you can't pull up to a gas station and strike up a conversation with your fellow man over your car, what're you doing?” And I LOVE the gas station conversations.

What makes my car Unique

It’s hard for these chargers to stand out. They made this specific body from 15-23. And if you don’t know what to look for it’s very easy to confuse a 300hp v6 with the 800hp monsters. But honestly, that’s one of the things I like about it. If you don’t know, you don’t need to know. If you know, you know. The paint definitely makes it stand out from the crowd a bit.

The Work

Mike Hooper made this car what it is. From day one I had in mind what I wanted it to look like. And he knocked it out of the park. I will say he isn’t fond of the stripe and made me come in and tape the stripe off. I know it’s a bit of an unusual paint job but I don’t mind being different even if it’s not what others like. He also tinted the tails bringing it all in together.  As for intake, diff brace, catch can, ground effects, and exhaust, I installed all that.

Future Plans

With so many things that can be done to these cars, I feel like I should be happy with the little over 800hp that it has. If the time ever comes to upgrade any further though Kooks headers would be one of the first things. After that, I would go with a smaller pulley, cam and a tune. Realistically the power that it has is currently insane for a street car much less a daily driver.

Advice/Tips

There are purists and enthusiasts. Being that I have highly outrageous vehicles (mainly my truck) I’m used to getting slammed by purists. And that is fine. Everyone has their opinion. I would suggest though being a true enthusiast. And finding what others are passionate about with their cars and encouraging them in that. Never let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t have done that to your vehicle. It is your vehicle, your passion, and your drive.

Be the best you you can be and don’t let anyone tear you down.

On a more personal level. Opposites may attract but look for a spouse that has the same morals, values and passions as you do. All the aspects of life can be shared and loved by both. My wife is truly my biggest supporter. She not only wants the best cars for herself but for me also. If it wasn’t for her I may have never bought this car. Along with letting me continue to spend more and more on my truck.

Just remember the JOY method. Jesus first. Others second. Yourself last. If you keep God first in your life all will work out for you in the end.

The Car Scene

I have always loved going to car shows and seeing others' reactions not just to my builds but to others. It makes me happy to be a part of that. Nothing pleases me more at a show than to hear someone younger saying they want that car. Literally just happened this weekend.

The family was walking through the show and as they approached my car the little boy got more and more excited saying he wants my car when he gets older. As they went on to other cars he continued to point back at mine yelling I want that one. It’s adorable and a humbling experience knowing that my vehicle was going to be what he possibly could base his future car after.

Dream Car

The vehicle that plastered my walls when I was younger, and I continue to this day buying Hot Wheels of, is a 1965 Shelby Cobra. As much as I love the original and what it represents as a turning point in racing I would prefer a replica. Not just bc of the price tag but bc I could modify it and have it look the way I wanted and be comfortable for a 6’4” dude like me with 14-15 size shoes.

I was given the opportunity to sit in one at a show and in that particular replica I was unable to fully sit in the seat and I noticed that my feet would be hitting either gas and brake together or brake and clutch. So that one was a no-go. Some day maybe I will be able to find a comfortable option. But for now this 800+ full-size, family sedan will do.
